Description

E.. E. HULL. SASH HOLDER.
(No Model.)
Patented May'19,-1896.
WWW
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EUGENE E. HULL, OF SILVER CLIFF, COLORADO, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO JOHN FEIST AND JESSE FORN-EY, OF SAME PL'ACE.
SASH-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 560,356, dated May 19, 1896.
Application filed February 13, 1896. Serial No. 579,109. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EUGENE E. I-IULL, acitizen of the United States, residing at Silver Cliff, in the county of Custer and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Sash Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to improvements structa sash with spring-cushions of particular construction disposed on the edges of the grooves in the window-frame, as hereinafter specified.
I have fully and clearly illustrated the invention in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a front view of a window, showing the holders applied to the sash, the stiles of the sash being shown as broken away at the points where the holders are inserted and secured. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the sash and holder. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the holder parts arranged in relative positions. Fig. 4:15 alongitudinal central section through a part of a sash and the holder.
A designates a window-sash, and B the window, both of the usual construction, wherein the sash moves up and down in guides or ways in the side pieces of the frame. In the outer edge of each stile of the window-sash is formed a mortise 1 of such size as to take and hold the holders substantially as shown. A holder is placed in each mortise and bears against the face of the groove in which the sash slides. The holders are duplicates in construction and therefore the description of one applies to the other, and, referring to the drawings, 0 designates the base-plate, fitting the bottom of the mortise and formed with circular projecting studs 2 2 constituting seats for holding the inner ends of the springcushions. On each end of the base-plate C is detachably placed a metal block 3 3 in the inner faces of which is formed a recess 4, in which the ends of the movable plateare disposed and slide.
D designates the movable'plate, which is pushed outward by the springs. This plate is formed with inclined ends 5 5 terminating in rectangular projections 6 6 which fit loosely in the recesses 4 and are held and limited in their upward movement by the upper wall or flange of the recesses in the end blocks 3 3 On the under side or face of the plate D are formed studs 7 7 standing directly in alinement with the lower studs 2 2 and arranged on these studs are two spiral springs 8 8 the force of which pushes the plate D outward, and when the holder is secured in place holds it in constant frictional contact with the surface of the guides in the window-frame.
To assemble the parts in their operative relation, the bottom plate 0 is fitted in the mortise and the springs placed thereon on the seats intended for them. The movable plate is then placed on the springs and the end blocks on the movable plate, and then screws are projected through the blocks and ends of the bottom plate into the sash-stile, and the holder is in proper-position for use. The sash with the holders thereon is inserted in the usual manner, the movable plates being pushed inward even with the face edge of the stiles, and then the outward force of the springs pushes the plates into contact with the window-frame, and the sash will be held in any position to which it is moved.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- r A window-sash holder, comprisinga bottom plate having projections thereon to take the .ends of springs, an upper plate having inclined end portions and projections from the foot of the inclines, and formed with seats to take the ends of springs, spiral springs arranged on the seats on the plates, end blocks on the ends of the bottom plate formed with ways or recesses to take and hold the ends of the upper plate, and fastening-screws projecting through the end blocks and the ends of the bottom plate.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
