SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 560,186, dated May 19, 1896.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RIGHTER WILLIAM BEI- DLEMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Nanticoke, in the county of Luzcrne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spikes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

' This invention relates to spikes for railway and other purposes, and the object thereof is to provide a spike which, having been once driven into a tie or other article, will not work loose, come out, or be accidentally detached therefrom.

In the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown my invention applied to a railway-spike, and said invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a tranverse section of a railwayrail, showing my improved spike and the part of the tie into which the spike is driven; and Fig. 2, a side or back view of the spike.

In the practice of my invention I provide a spike A, having a head B, one side of which is provided with a shoulder or projection O, which is adapted to overlap the base-flange I) of a railway-rail. The spike A is preferably square in cross-section or provided with one flat surface, and formed therein is a triangular notch or recess E, the base of which is directed upwardly, and the side wall of which is directed downwardly and outwardly, so as to form an inclined plane, and mounted therein or placed therein is a cylindrical roller F. When the spike is driven into the tie or other article, a portion of which is shown at G, the roller F will be pressed upwardly into the enlarged portion of the notch or recess E,

as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and if an attempt be made to remove the spike the roller F will move downwardly over the inclined plane formed by the notch or recess E and press upon the material of the tie and thus prevent the removal of the spike, and this operation of the roller F will also prevent the spike from working out or becoming loose.

This improvement is simple in construction and operation and does not add materially to the cost of the spike, while being well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended; and my invention is not limited to the form of the notch or recess E or to the form of the roller F, and I reserve the right to make all such changes in and modifications of the construction herein described as fairly come within the scope of the invention;

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A spike provided with a notch or recess in one side thereof, the back of which forms an outwardly and downwardly directed inclined plane, and a roller mounted or placed in said notch or recess, substantially as shown and described.

2. A railway-spike, which is provided with a head, and a flat side or surface, said flat side or surface being provided with a notch or recess which is triangular in form in vertical section,whereby an outwardly and downwardly inclined plane is formed, and a roller mounted or placed in said notch or recess, substantially as shown and described.
