Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES W. OONOLLY, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
IM PROVED DRAFT ATTACH M ENT.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,012, dated July 3, 1866.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, C. W. GONOLLY, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Draft Attachment to Eames; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this speciiication, in which- Figure l is a front view of the hames with my invention attached. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan or top view of one ofthe draft-bows B.
Like letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention is intended mainly for heavy draft purposes, such as canal-towing, streetcar hauling', Snc.; and it consists in providing each pair of haines with an adjustable bow,
which is attached to the front of the haines 7 `bow is made in two parts and hinged together by a suitable screw-bolt, c, which also secures it to the swiveled-clip O. The neck-yoke Y is pivoted to the front half of the clip or swivel.
The axis of the swivel is horizontal, and theV neck-yoke is pivoted to it with avertical axis. The draft-ring R, to which the tow-line or its equivalent is attached, is swiveled to the center of the neck-yoke. The bows B are provided on the upper side with suitable strap loops d, to which the lower end of the suspension-straps s are attached, their upper ends being secured to the hooks h. These straps are provided with buckles b, whereby they may be taken up or let out, as may be necessary. Their length should be so adjusted as to permit the neck-yoke to drop a trifle below a point in line with the point of attachment with the resistance, and the eyebolts a and the bows are prevented from being thrown `above that line by means of the martingale straps S,
which may be attached to the end of the neckyoke, as shown, and to the lower end of the haines. These straps may also be lengthened or shortened.
The swivels C may be made with a loop on the under side to attach the strap to, if desired.
Instead of the straps, it might be desired to use brace-rods to run from the bows to the hames, in which case the rods should be provided with a swivel-nut for the purpose of lengthening` or shortening` them. lf the adjustable rods should be used, the straps S might be dispensed with.
It will be seen that by means ofthe swivels O and the pivoted connection with the neckyoke the horses may change their relative positions as they travel, either horizontally or vertically, to any desirable or necessary extent.
This invention avoids the necessity of whiflletrees.
By making the draft attachment to the front of the hames instead of at the outside, as heretofore practiced, it is believed that the tendency to gall the animals shoulder or breast will be very greatly reduced, as each shoulder alternately wlllbe partially relieved from the pressure of the collar at each step, and thus permit a circulation of air under the collar to keep the breast cool.
By means of the joint in the center of the bows B they may be adjusted to the differentsized horses, and after the hames are placed on the horse the bolt should be tightened so as to hold the joint rigidly.
Wha-t I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The adjustable bows B, when attached to the front of the hannes and used-without tugs, substantially as and for the purposes` set forth.
2. ln combination with the bows B, the suspension-straps s and the steadying-straps S.
3. The swiveled clip C, constructed and arranged as described, and for the purposes set forth.
