SPECIFICATION forming 5am of Letters Patent No. 559,509, dated May 5, 1896. Application ma July 8,1895- Serial No. 655,341. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, J ENS ZINN, a subject of the King of Denmark,residing at Copenhagen, in the Kingdom of Denmark, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Military Equipments and Accoutrements'; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a combination of the several articles ordinarily used in the service equipment or knapsack ofsoldiers, packed together in such a manner that they maybe made to serve as a safety-shield, which during an advance can be worn upon the breast or upon one of the arms, while during a retreat they are carried on the back, and in action under fire can be placed upright in front of the soldier, so as both to serve as a shield and also as a rest for his rifle. The separate parts can be made of the ordinary materials used for the purpose, the metal parts, for instance, of aluminium or aluminium alloy, aluminium steel, or the like.

In the accompanying drawings are shown, first, the several objects which when put together form the shield, Figures 1 to 8; secondly, the complete shield, Figs. 9 to 12.,

It should be remarked that the number and kind of the separate articles ofequipment which go to form the shield may be varied more or less, as desired, without departing from the principle of the invention.

Fig. 1 shows a spade one edge of the blade of which forms a saw, while its edge can also be used as an ax if the blade is turned around upon the pin at the end of a hollow shaft d, upon which it fits into the positions Figs. 2 and S.

A pick 6, Fig. 3, can be screwed into the socket of the spade, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the spade can now be used either as a pick or as an ax. The hollow shaft d may serve as a receptacle for gun-cotton cartridges, binding material, and the like. The handle of the shaft is provided with a screw-spanner and can, when the spade or the shaft is stuck in the ground, serve as a support for the rifle.

Figs. i and 5 show a double partable flask a, which can be fitted into a rectangular fryingpan 0, Figs. 6 and 7. The blade of the spade b is arranged with its socket upward behind the flask a, Figs. 9, 10, and 11, and the pick and the spade-shaft against the end of the latter in the pan 0, which then, together with its contents, is inserted into an open-topped deep rectangularboX-shaped boiling-vessel f, Figs. 9, 10, and 11, which may, if desired, be provided with a movable suspending device.

Finally the several articles,packed together in the way described, are inclosed in a case g, Fig. 12, and the shield is complete.

The improved shield does not weigh more than the ordinary equipment, as it is formed of the articles which form such equipment, which are all fitted together, as described. It can be carried on the back, on the breast, or on the arm, or it can be arranged upon the ground in front of the soldier and then serves as a shield as well as forming a rest for his rifle, as it obviously constitutes a shield and protection against weapons of all kinds, not only projectiles, but also against swordstrokes, lance-thrusts, and arrows.

Having fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is- The herein-described shield, consisting of a spade-blade, which can be used as a spade, ax and pick, a hollow shaft for this blade, the handle of which forms a universal-screw spanner, a pick-head, and a double field-flask, a frying-pan and a deep rectangular boilingvessel, which parts are packed together and fitted in a case provided With carrying-straps, all substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
