SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 558,499, dated April 21, 1896. Application filed December 24, 1894. Serial No. 532,795. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES LAGUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hot Springs, in the county of Garland and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Kicking-Straps; and I do here-.
by declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is a combination kickingstrap and overcheck to be used on kicking horses and also in breaking colts.
The black straps represent the invention. The loops on lower end of invention fasten around cross-bar or singletree of vehicle. It can be used on single or double harness.
The invention in no way interferes with the traveling of the horse. The straps over the back hang slack from back-band or where they buckle to overcheck.
I claim a horse cannot kick without lowering his head, and in so doing he takes up slack in back-straps, and then, being fastened to cross-bar or singletree, which are stationary on all vehicles, makes it impossible for him to kick.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view of my invention in use. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of my invention. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the hip-strap.
My invention is described as follows:
The black lines in the drawings indicate the invention, in which a is the bit, a are the face-pieces, and b the head-pieces, dividing into two parts 0 c, terminating at the buckles c c", and to the ends of these two parts 0 are buckled two other straps c terminating at the buckles c and to the ends of these straps c are buckled loops dby means of the buckles c and are made adjustable by means of the buckles dthat is, the loops by means of said buckles cl may be made larger or smaller to fit the singletree 6. (See Fig. 1.)
To the strap cis buckled a loop f by means of the buckles f, and said strap is hooked over the horn of the saddle g.
To the crupper-strap is adjustably secured a short hip-strap h, provided with an adjustable strap h, having at each end rings k through which the straps 0 work. This strap h passes through slits and under straps it made by said slits in said hip-strap, and is secured by a buckle h. This strap being doubled back on itself and buckled may be made longer or shorter, so as to adapt the straps c to a larger or smaller horse. Said strap h passes over the crupper-strap 7L and under straps h, sewed on top of said crupper-strap. Thus said hip-strap-h, strap h, and crupper-strap if have a certain amount of play or adjustability to each other, so as not to rub the horse when walking. The crupper-strap k is also provided with a buckle 2', so that it may be made longer or shorter.
Thus the whole invention is adjustable, so
that it may be made to fit any horse.
The pieces a, a, b, c, and f constitute a checkrein, and the pieces a, b, 0, 0 d, hipstrap h, strap h, and rings h constitute the kicking-straps, and consequently my invention is a combination checkrein and kickingstrap.
Having described my invention, claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with a harness, substantially as shown and described, the bit a, straps a, b, and c, strap f, secured to strap 0, by buckles f, and adapted to have its looped end hooked over the horn of the saddle g, straps 0 having their forward ends secured to straps c, by means of buckles 0, their rear ends passing through rings g, and 71 loops (1, provided with adjustable buckles d, and secured to straps 0 by means of buckles c hip-strap h, adjustably secured to the crupper-strap and having adjustably secured in it strap h, provided with rings W, and made adjustable. by the buckles h, substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination with a harness and kicking device, substantially as shown and described, the hip-strap h, provided with straps h straps h, passing under the straps h over the crupper-strap h, and under the crupperstraps h, and having in each end. rings b substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
3.
