UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. DE ARDEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LOCK FRAME OR CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 557,772, dated April '7, 1896.
Application filed June 14,1895. Serial No. 552,783. (No model.) I
To all ZU7L0777/ it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. DE ARDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Look Frames or Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates especially to lock cases or frames, and has for its object the provision of a case which shall effectually prevent the insertion of a knife-blade or other thin instrument for pushing back the springbolt, and also wherein the case and nose-piece are so constructed as to resist prying apart.
To attain the desired end, my invention consists, essentially, in a lock-frame having a casing projecting from the face thereof, said casing surrounding the lock-bolt and overhanging upon the top, bottom, and rear in such a manner as to engage with the nosepiece, preventing the spreading apart of the lock and nose-piece; and my invention also involves certain other novel and useful combinations or arrangements of parts and peculiarities of construction and operation, all of which will be hereinafter first fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, Figure l is a side elevation of a lock case or frame and nose-piece embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a view thereof in horizontal section at line 50-00 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the lock-case, the keeper being removed.
Similar numerals of reference, wherever they occur, indicate corresponding parts in all figures.
l is the body of the lock-frame, which may be made in any desired shape or style.
2 is a projecting casing formed ,upon the face of the lock-frame and surrounding the bolt-opening. This casing 2 is provided at top and bottom with overhanging edges 3 and at the rear with a similar edge 4.
5 is a nose-piece or keeper cut out at its front edge, as at 6, to correspond with the easing upon the lock-frame. It is also cut away at 7 to correspond with the part 4 of the easing, as particularly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
I have shown my invention as embodied in a rim-lock night-latch; but it is obvious that the same principle of construction may be used in a mortise-lock as well.
lVhen constructed and arranged in accordance with the foregoing description, the operation of my invention is as follows: As the door bearing the lock is closed the casing 2 upon the frame 1 enters the nose-piece 5, as plainly illustrated. Now if any instrument be inserted with the design of spreading the lock-frame and nose-piece the result is to bring the parts 3, 6, 4, and '7 against each other, effectually preventing any such movement, and as the lock cannot be forced away from the nose-piece it is impossible to insert any instrument, no matter how thin, to force back the bolt.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a lock-frame having a projecting casing upon its face, the top, bottom and rear whereof overhang, of a nosepiece or keeper, cut away to correspond with the shape of the face of the lock-frame whereby spreading apart or separation of the frame and nose-piece is prevented, substantially as shown and described.
