v H. PEPPER. MUSIC HOLDER FOR PIANOS, 6L0.
Patented Mar. 10,1896.
Cjwm TOR Wax ATTORNEY WITNESSES:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY PEPPER, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
MUSIC-HOLDER FOR PIANOS, 84,0.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,064, dated March 10, 1896. Application filed October 22, 1895. Serial No. 566,542. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY PEPPER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Music-Holders for Pianos and other Instruments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to music-holders for upright pianos and similar instruments, and the object thereof is to provide a device of this class which may be readily applied to such instruments as now constructed and used in connection with the music-holder with which such instruments are supplied; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combi nation, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of an upright piano provided with my improved musicholder, and Fig. 2 is a similar view of the 1nusic-holder detached.
In the drawings forming part of this application, A represents an ordinary piano provided with the usual hinged cover B for the keyboard, which is adapted to be raised to the position shown in Fig. 1 or lowered so as to cover the keyboard, and 0 represents the usual music-holder employed in connection with this class of instruments which is adapted to be raised and supported flush with the facing D of the upright portion of the instrument, or to be lowered so that the base thereof projects over the top of the cover B, when in the position shown in Fig. 1, and this holder 0 is provided at the bottom with an outwardly and upwardly directed flange E, which serves to support the sheets of music on the holder.
In the practice of my invention I provide a supplemental music-holder F, comprising a plate or frame G, which is preferably of the same general form as the holder 0, and formed on or secured to one side thereof and near the lower edge is an outwardly and upwardly directed flange or plate g, which extends across the plate or frame G, and on the opposite side is a similar flange or plate g, and one of these plates or flanges is preferably above or higher than the other.
The object in forming the flanges g and g on opposite sides of the plate or frame G, and one beneath the other, is to provide a support for sheets of music of diiferent sizes or for book-music of different sizes, and also to provide means whereby the music may be held in the higher or lower position, as desired, so as to bring the same in line with the eyes; and my improved supplemental music-holder is applied by simply placing it upon the holder 0, as shown in Fig. 1, and in this position it is supported by one of the flanges on the plate G, and said holder is also reversible and detachable, as will be understood, and it may be used in other relations for supporting books or other papers and as a support for writing-paper. I also preferably provide the upper edge of the plate or frame Gwith strips K, of rubber or similar material, and the outer edges of the flanges or plates g and g are also similarly provided, as shown at and k, and similar strips of rubber or other material are also placed on each side of the bottom of the plate or frame G, as shown at L, and the object of this construction is to prevent the scratching of or othewise injuring the holder 0, the hinged cover B of the keyboard, or other portions of the piano, and said rubber strips 76 and 70, which are connected with the flanges or plates 9 and 9, also" serve to prevent the sheets of music from slipping, as will be readily understood. The said flanges or plates 9 and g are, as will be seen on an examina tion of the construction shown in Fig. 2, preferably curved outwardly; but this arrangement is immaterial, and said plates or flanges may be straight, if desired.
My improvement constitutes a simple and effective device for the purpose specified, and my invention is not limited to the exact form and construction of the supplemental holder, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with a piano having a folding cover for keyboard and a music-support adapted to rest on said cover when open,
of a detachable and reversible supplemental inclined flanges or plates, said plates or flan at their upper edges, and said main plate or frame at its upper and lower edges, being provided with strips of rubber or similar material, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 21st day of October, 1895.
HARRY PEPPER.
