Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,522, dated June 12, 1866.

To all whom e't may concern:

Be it known that I, J. J. MOORE, of Little York, in the county of Cortland and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Modes of Lockin g Sleighs; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, and the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

A represents the sleigh, which is provided with a tongue, B, and made in the ordinary form. This tongue is connected to ahorizontal pivoted bar, 0, by means of a slot in the center of said bar and held in position by two braces, 0 0, which extend from the ba-rG to said tongue.

Upon the under side of the tongue is a metallic plate, a, which is bent at the rear end and prevents said tongue from being carried too far forward or being drawn out of the slot where it passes in the bar 0. Upon the under side of the tongue and braces 0 0 are two metallic rods ff, which meet a short distance forward of the braces 0 0, where they are pivoted and extend in the rear of the bar 0. These rods pass through staples in the bar 0 and extend obliquely from 00, where they are pivoted toward the sides of the sleigh-runners, where they are connected by rods 1) b, which rods are attached to the spurs h.

h h represent two metallic spurs, which are jointed and placed in an upright position at about half-way of the sleigh, and made so that the points may extend below the runners. These spurs are prevented being thrown too far back or forward by small metallic shields m m, which are set upon the inside of the sleigh-runners.

It will be seen that the tongue readily works in the slot 0 in the bar 0, and when pulled forward draws the rods f f and b 1) forward with said tongue, when the spur is bent by its joint and the point of the same not on the snow, ice, or ground, and when the horses are hacked to tongue pushes the rodsfand 1) against the joint of the spurs hh, causing the point of the same to project into the earth and retard the progress of the sleigh.

This invention will be found valuable for sleighing on ice, as when the spur is straightened, by means of pressing back the tongue, the point of said spur digs into the ice and will almostinstant] y retard the motion of the sleigh.

I am aware of the application of A. Larrowe; hence I disclaim the use of a rod passing up the tongue for applying the brakes.
