To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY Gr. VOIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county .of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knob Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in knob attachments for doors; and the main object of my improvements are simplicity and economy in construction and general efficiency and convenience of the article.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my knob attachment, showing one end of a knob-spindle and one knob. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same, some of the parts being shown in elevation; and Fig. 3 is an end view of the knob.

A designates the knob of any pleasing design and having the usual square hole for the spindle B. Said knob is also provided with an externally-threaded hub or shank 4L and dowel holes or sockets 5. One end of the spindle B is threaded on its corners and a shouldered screw-sleeve 6 is screwed thereon, said sleeve hearing at its front end the dowelpins 7. I prefer to employ two of said pins, and they are so located with reference to each other and the axis of the sleeve as to register with either two diametrically-opposed dowelsockets in the knob. The larger diameter of the screw-sleeve is less than the diameter of the externally-threaded hub or shank 4 of the knob. Surrounding the shouldered screwsleeve is the screw-thimble 0, having its smaller inner diameter fitted to the smaller portion of the screw-sleeve while its larger portion is internally threaded and screwed upon the knob shank or hub 4:, and its shoulder 8 is designed to bear upon the shoulder of the screw-sleeve 6. The exterior of its larger portion is preferably of an angular form, as at 9, Fig. 1, for the application of a wrench when desired.

In use the companion knob (not shown) may be secured to the spindle in any proper or ordinary manner. The threaded end of the spindle can be laid bare and slipped through the door and latch-hub in the usual manner. The screw-sleeve with the thimble on it can now be screwed upon the threaded end of the spindle until their inner ends properly bear against the knob-escutcheon. The dowel-pins are long enough to project somewhat in front of the front end of the thimble. The knob can now be slipped on the spindle and if the dowel-pins do not register with the holes in the knob-shank the sleeve can be turned a small fraction of a revolution, not exceeding one-quarter, to bring said pins directly in front of two of the diametricallyopposed holes in the knob and the ends of the pins entered therein. The threaded shank and thimble now come together and by entering the threads and turning the thimble the knob can be drawn on until the end of its shank or hub bears firmly against the front end of the screwsleeve, the larger or shouldered portion of said sleeve being firmly clamped between the end of the knob-shank and the shoulder 8 of the thimble to hold said sleeve and its dowel-pins securely in place. Unscrewing the thimble will crowd the knob off until the screwthreads run out, after which the knob may be pulled off the spindle and the screw-sleeve unscrewed therefrom.

I claim as my invention The herein-described knob attachment consisting of the threaded end of the square spindle, the shouldered screw-sleeve fitted thereto and having the dowel-pins, the knob provided with dowel-sockets and the threaded shank, and the screw-thimble fitted to said threaded shank and adapted to bind the screw-sleeve and knob together, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
