Description

D. L. BABGOGK.
Wagon-Standard.
No. 55,453. Patented "June 12, 1866.
WE ZMQSSGS'.
UNITED STATES D. L. BABOOOK, OF ST. CHARLES, MINNESOTA.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE BOLSTER FOR WAGONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,453, dated June 1'2, 1866.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, D. L. BABCOOK, of St. Charles, in the county of Winona and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, like letters indieating like parts wherever they occur.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use the invention, I will proceed to describe it.
My invention consists in a metal cap formed to fit the end of the bolster and provided with a socket for receiving and holding the stake.
Figure l is a top-plan view, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal vertical section of a portion of the bolster with my improvement applied.
As usually constructed, the bolster has a mortise formed in it some little distance from the end to receive the stake, which is then secured by iron braces on each side, and generally another at the end of the bolster, and also by an iron bar or strap on the inside of the stake. To this is then added a metal band passing around the end of the bolster, and secured by two bolts passing through it and the bolster.
I substitute for all these a simple metal cap, B, which may be made of malleable iron and cast of the form desired.
A represents the wooden bolster, and B the metal cap, formed to fit thereon,as shown. In the upper portion of the cap B a hole, a, is formed of proper size and form to receive the stake G, which I propose to make of iron, the lower end of the stake having a small projection or tongue extending through ahole in the under side of the cap, and being secured by a nut, c. as shown in Fig. 2. The cap, being fitted snugly upon the end of the bolster, is secured by a bolt, 0, passing through it and the bolster either vertically or horizontally. \Vhe-n used on the front bolster, the cap B may be prolonged on its under side, as shown at n, thereby forming a rub-iron to rest on the sway-bar. By this means the bolster is prevented from splitting at the end, and the stake securely fastenedat the extreme end of the bolster, thus enabling a wider box to be used on the wagon. The weight of the boX and load, resting 011 the upper side ofthe cap, serves also to prevent it from any tendency to tip by pressure against the stake, and thus become loosened.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- The metal cap B, constructed substantially as shown, and applied to the bolster of ordinary wagons and similar vehicles, as and for the purpose set forth.
D. L. BABGOOK.
