Description

(No Model.) J. W. PACKARD. PERMUTATION LOCK.
- Patented Dec.'3, 1895.
Hill Nrrnn STATES JEROME IV. PACKARD, OF MALDEN, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-IIALF TO ALBERT M. ELLIS, OF SAME PLACE.
PERIVIUTATION-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION Vforming part of Letters Patent No. 550,641, dated December 3, 1895.. Applicationmedivamhv,1895. sentire. 540,926. (Nominal.)
To @ZZ whom, t may concern.-
Be it known that I, JEROME W. PACKARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Malden, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Permutation- Locks, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in permutation-locks; and the object of the invention is to provide a lock of this character which shall consist of the fewest possible parts arranged in an extremely simple manner, whereby the lock may be very easily and cheaply produced and will not be liable to get out of order, while at the same time the construction is such that the lock cannot be opened or operated by unauthorized persons.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a face view of a padlock. Fig'. 2 shows the body of the lock in plan. Fig. 3 is aview with the disk removed. Fig. 3 is a sectional view. Fig. 4 is a plan View, and Fig. 5 is an edge view, of a modified form, showing the invention as applied to sliding bolt-lock; Fig. 6, a sectional view of the same 5 and Fig. 7 is a detail view. 1
Referring to theform shown in the first three figures,.A represents a frame or body portion preferably of disk shape, and B the hook or staple of the lock, which has one arm b journaled in an opening b in the edge of the disk and retained therein by a key h2. The other end b3 of the hook rests ina second opening h4. This opening or slot b4 is open at one or both sides to permit the hook to be swung around upon its arm b as a pivot when the retainingplates are moved laterally in unlocking. o
Preferably two side or retaining disks or plates C D are shown in the drawings, and these disks are connected by a central spindle or pin E, which passes through and is adapted to turn in a central opening e in the body portion. The disks are journaled upon the ends of the spindle, so that not only can the spindle turn in the body portion, and with it the two disks, but each disk may be rotated independently of the shaft and of the other disk.
In order to permit the disks to be moved laterally to clear the movable end of the hook, a slotd extends radially from the opening e, and this slot is less in width than the diameter of the opening, while the spindle has two of its sides flattened, so that when these iiattened sides are brought into line with the radial slot the spindle and disks maybe moved laterally to uncover the staple, which may then be turned.
The edge of the body portion may be pro vided with any suitable characters, and an arrow or line provided on the head e of the spindle, so that when the line or arrow points to a certain character the spindle will be in the proper position to permit lateral movement, as above described. The disks are also connected with the body portion, so that they are each held against lateral movement, eX- cept when adjusted to a certain position. This result is accomplished by having an annular groove f in one part, (shown, for eX- ample, in the disk,) with a radial groove f leading therefrom, and a pin or projection f2 from the adjacent part enters this groove, and it will thus be seen that each plate can at all times be rotated freely, but can only be moved laterally when the pin is in line with the radial groove. Suitable characters are provided upon the edges of the disk, and when certain predetermined characters upon the disks and body are in line with eachother and the arrow on the shaft-head points correctly the plates can then be moved laterally and the device unlocked.
In the modified form shown in Figs. 5, 6, and 7 the body portion A is shown connected by a rigid central spindle a to a door Cf, provided with a suitable spring-lock H, of any suitable or desired construction. The bolt I of the lock has secured rigidly to it a plate J, having an annular opening j. The retaining-plates C D are mounted upon the spindle in the same manner as in the main form and have the same form of pin-and-slot connection with each other and with the head or body portion. The inner plate D has an annular iianffe d2 which engages the annular b 7 C D IOO opening in the plate J. It will thus be seen that so long as the disks are held against lateral movement the bolt is held securely against being unlocked, but When the disks are rotated to bring them into the proper position to permit them to be slid laterally upon the spindle the bolt. may be operated in the usual manner.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is- 1. A permutation lock comprising the frame, the retaining device movably sup ported therein, the spindle and the rotatable and laterally movable disk for locking said retaining device against movement except when set at a predetermined position, substantially as described.
2. A permutation lock comprising the frame, the retaining device movably carried thereby, the disks rotatably and laterally movable upon said spindle, means for holding them against lateral movement except When at a predetermined position, and means for preventing the movement of one disk independent of the other, substantially as described.
3. A permutation lock comprising the frame, the retaining device, the spindle, having iiattened sides, and the disk rotatably mounted upon the spindle, said iiattened sides permitting lateral movement of the disk upon the frame to release the retaining device, substantially as described.
4. A permutation lock comprising the frame, the retaining device, the spindle, the disk rotatably and laterally movable of the frame, and the connection between the disk and the frame comprising an annular groove in one member With a radial groove leading into said annular groove, and a pin or projection from the adjacent member entering said groove, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JEROME WV. PACKARD.
