A. A. MOBILE,
BADGE.
No.-550,39 5. PatentedNov. 26, 1895.-
2 5 min-ENTER I I g 542 I 7' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR A. MCRAE, OF ATTLEBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS.
BADGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of .Letters Patent No. 550,395, dated November 26, 1895. Application filed January 31 1895- Serial No. 536 ,80'7. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR A. MORAE, of Attleborough, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Badges; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention has reference to an improvement in badges; and it consists in the peculiar and novel construction more fully set forth hereinafter.
Badges are largely worn by members of various associations and usually contain the initial letters of the names of the associations. They are made by striking the metal in a die. Special dies have to be made and engraved for the badges of each association, because the initial letters for each differ. The same outline and ornamentation of the badge, when of artistic design, is frequently used by a number of associations; but on account of the different initial letters required for each a large number of very expensive dies have to be made to make the different badges.
The object of this invention is to save this large outlay for dies and adapt the use of one well-cut die for making the badges for any association desired.
Figure 1 is a front view of an ornamental badge having in the center the representation of an anchor and in the circular border the initial letters U B 0. Fig. 2 is a face view of a badge representing a flag with the initial letters N U S, and Fig. 3 is a section of a badge.
In making badges in accordance with my invention I prepare a die for stamping the body of the badge 4. with the raised edges 5, and with it stamp the blank shown in section in Fig. 3. On the blank so stamped I secure the initial letters 6, and then cover the spaces 7 between the initial letters 6 and the border with enamel of any desired color or colors.
The badge shown in Fig. 1 requires a costly die. .As I require only one die for making the badges for a large number of associations, the die can be made more perfect even at a larger cost. This diewill produce the blank having the upper and lower ornamentations, the raised ribs 5 5, the inner circle with the raised anchor, and the annular space in which the initial letters U B O or other letters are secured by means of solder. The face of the badge is then covered between the letters, the raised rims, and ornaments with enamel of the desired color or colors.
In making the badge shown in Fig. 2, I stamp the same in a die without the initial letters, and then secure such letters as are desired and fill the face with enamel.
Badges produced in my improved manner are as artistic, as durable, and as salable as those produced by specially-engraved dies for each kind of badge, and the saving in dies is very considerable.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and .desire to secure by Letters Patent- An ornamental badge, consisting of a blank stamped in a suitable die to form the ornamentations and the raised edges, provided with initial letters 6 inserted after the blank has been stamped and secured bysolder before the interspaces are filled with enamel, whereby the stamped blanks are adapted for use as badges for different times and occasions, as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
ARTHUR A. MORAE.
