Be it known that I, CAMILLE DUREY, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at 17 and 19 Rue le Brun, Paris, France, have in- Y vented a certain new and useful Improvement in Files, (which has been patented in France, No. 238,163, dated April 30, 1894,) of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to improved devices for easily and rapidly filing letters, bills, &c.

Figure 1 shows a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View. Fig. 3 shows the two principal parts separated. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 show views of a modification.

My apparatus consists of two distinct parts, one of which A is movable and can be removed whenever desired. The other part B is rigidly fixed upon a pasteboard base. The movable part consists .of two curved rods a b, fixed upon a cross-bar c, that carries a small projecting piece d. The free extremities of the rods a b are reduced to fit into the ends of the rods g h of the part B. The fixed or rigid part B consists of two vertical hollow rods g h upon a cross-bar i, upon which is arranged a piece k, pivoted at Z.

The part B is rigidly fixed upon one of the sides of a piece of pasteboard oc, Fig. 1. The extremities of the rods a b are then placed, respectively, in the tubes g h-,as can be seen The locking-piece lc is then brought into engagement with the projecting piece d. In this way the two parts A and B are rigidly united.

It will be noticed that the engagement of the parts a b g h will prevent the separation horizontally of the parts A and B, while the piece d, projecting under the locking-piece 7c, will prevent the vertical movement of the part A in relation to the part iB.

By means of a perforator I make two hole in the edge of the paper to be filed, the distance between the holes being equal to that between the center of the rod g and the center of the rod h. Then as the part Ais separated from the part B, as indicated -in Fig. 3, I introduce the two pivots g h in the holes of the paper. I then unite the part A with the part B by introducing the free extremity of the rods a b in the corresponding openings of the rods g h, and I place the piece 7c upon the projecting piece d, as shown in Fig. 1. It will be easily understood that by so doing a considerable number of papers can be filed the one upon the other. holding the same together by being laid across the same, the buckle f engaging the rod g, (see Fig. 1;) or the rod may be pivoted to the part Z), as in Fig. 3. If, on the contrary, it is desired to separate the filed sheets, it will be sufficient to remove the buckle f from the rod g, which can then be raised and slipped around the rod b. If it is desired to withdraw one or more sheets, the operation is very simple. The locking-piece lc is first turned so as to release the projection d, and the movable part A is removed. The extremities of the pivots g h being thus free, it will be very easy to remove the sheets it is desired to.

I would remark that my apparatus is constructed so that the point of junction m, Fig. 2, between the movable and fixed rods does not present the least projection, so that the sheets of paper cannot be torn.

One of the characteristic points of my file is that as the locking-piece lo is placed between the two parts of the led sheets when the file is open (and thatV there are sheets at the right and sheets at the left) it will be possible to open and close the apparatus without injury to the sheets. Instead of using only two curved rods a b, corresponding to two rods-or tubes g h, I may use three, four, or more similar rods. Finally, the curving ofthe rods a and b (indicated in said drawings) can be modified at pleasure. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 4: to 6 both parts of the apparatus are fixed upon the hook-shaped pasteboard cover-and are connected by means of a hinge n. A rod o is placed upon the piece s, and at its upper extremity it is provided with a pivoted hook the end catching around the grooved end y of the piece u, mounted upon the plate t. In this arrangement, as in that which I have previously described, each of the rods is made so that there will be no projection at the point of junction Z in order not to tear the pieces of IOO paper. In this form I first punch two holes in the edge of the paper to be tiled a proper distance apart, and the two parts of the apparatus being` separated, Fig. 5, the rods o 1J are introduced in the holes punched in the sheets of paper. After this the two separated parts are connected again, (see Fig. 4,) and in order to prevent separation the hook 00 is placed in the groove of the rod u. A tra-ns verse rod identical with the piece e may also be used. With the aid of the above-described apparatus it will be easy to file all, kinds of papers, as letters, bills, &e. Then together, it will be very easy to read them, and, if desired, to remove some or all of them very readily.

I claiml. In combination, in a file for letters and the like the t\\'o plates, the engaging rods thereon and the horizontally swinging locking piece ior holding the two plates in engagement, said locking piece being pvoted to one plate and engaging a projection on the other part, substantially as described.
