To all whom it may concern:-
Beit known that I, J noon OSCAR ZIEGLEE, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Gas-Burners, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specication, like letters on the drawings representing'like parts.

This invention relates to gas-burners, particularly to that type of burner known as a Bunsen, the object of the invention being to provide novel means for simultaneously varying the air and gas inlets for the regulation of the flame and preferably to provide a differential variation of said inlets, whereby the ratio between the inlets is maintained substantially constant whatever be the degree of opening. In the embodiment of my invention illustrated in the drawings, A is a suitable base provided with an upwardly-extended internally-threaded nipple @,'at one'side of which is arrangedthe gas-inlet (2l/,preferably through member, made conical to co-operate with the member b2 and perforated at c2 for the exit of the gas. The thimble c (see Fig. 5) has secured to its end the tube d, from the end of which the gas flame is projected when in use, the said tube d being rotated by or with the said thimble and, as herein shown, having 5o adjacent the conical end of the said thimble two oppositely-arranged air-inlet openings d', to be referred to.
Secured to the base at one side of the nipple a I have shown a post e, upon which is loosely j ournaled an intermediate connection f, (shown as comprising two connected gears f andf) the gear f meshing with a gear c3, fast on and rotatable with the thimble c and its attached tube d, the gear f2 being in mesh with the gear h, fast on the lower end of a valvesleeve h', loosely surrounding the tube d and provided with inlet-openings h2, corresponding in size and location with the air-inlets d in the said tube. The gears c3 and h, as herein shown, are provided with the same number of teeth, while the gears fIV and f2 of the intermediate connection, as herein shown, are provided with a different number of teeth, the gear f2 in the present instance having one less tooth than the gear f, forming thereby differential gearing to operate the gas and air inlets. An annular and milled disk c', rotatable with the thimble c and tube d, enters the space between the gears f and f2 of the intermediate connection fx, said disk t' thereby supporting the said intermediate connection upon its post c and forming an actuator having a vertical movement with the thimble and tube in the operation of the burner to be described.
In the normal condition of the apparatus the thimble c is in its lowermostposition, with its conical end fitting tightly upon the conical end of the valve-screw b, the inlets CZ' in the tube d being nearly or quite covered by the surrounding sleeve h. To start the burner, the disk Q1 is rotated in the direction of the arrow 25, Figs. 3 and 4, and by means of the dierential gearing the gear f will be rotated by the gear c3 in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 4,v to cause its thimble to be more or less unscrewed from the nipple a to lift vthe valve member c from the co-operating IOO air-inlets d' to admit air therethrough to mix with the gas to support the combustion. From this it will be clear that by rotation of the actuator or disk t' in one or the other direction the valve member c' will be moved toward or from its co-operating member b2 to regulate the supply of gas, and at the same time the gear f2, having a different number of teeth from the gear f imparts to the sleeve h' a faster or slower rotation, as the case may be, to thereby open or close the air-inlets d in the sides of the tube d2 in a iixed ratio to the gas -inlet The sleeve h' constitutes a valve to regulate the air-inlets, and the thimble c constitutes in eiect the valve t0 regulate the gas-inlet, both having a common actuator. ln the present device, for instance, inasmuch as the opening of the air-inlets is greater than the opening of the gas-orice, the movement to open or close the air-inlets must be more rapid than the movement to open or close the gas-inlet in order to preserve the constant ratio between their areas.
Vhile I prefer to incorporate my invention in a device similar to that herein shown and described, yet my said invention is not necessarily limited to such construction.
I claiml. In a burner of the class described, a base having a gas inlet, a valve seat, and a valve therefor having a relative movement to open and close said gas inlet, a tube leading from the said valve through which the gas is projected, one or more air inlet openings in the side of the said tube, a valve controlling the same, and intermediate gearing to cause simultaneous movement of the said gas and air valves, substantially as described.
2. A gas burner comprising a vertically movable threaded gas valve and its attached tube, provided with lateral air inlets, a valve shield encircling the said tube, gears connected respectively to the said tube and shield, an intermediate connection in mesh with both of said gears, the gears for moving the said tube and shield having a dii'i'erent number of teeth whereby simultaneous dif ferential rotation of the said tube and shield is obtained, substantially as described.
3. 'A base, an internally threaded nipple thereon, a valve member standing vertically within the said nipple, a thimble screwed into the said nipple and co-operatin g with the said screw to regulate the supply of gas, a tube on and rotatable with the said thimble and having lateral air inlets, a regulating shield encircling the said tube to open and close the said air inlets, gears on a-nd to move said thimble and shield, a post standing at one side of said nipple, and an actuator loosely rotatable thereon and comprising two gears meshing respectively with the said gears on the thimble and shield, said actuator rising and falling with the said thimble during rotation of the latter, substantially as described.
