Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
D. A. PRATT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-FASTENINGS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 541,953, dated May Q, 1866.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, D. A. PRATT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Window-Sash Fastening; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure L is a vertical section of my invention applied to a window; Fig. 2, a detached rear or inner view of the same; Fig. 3, afront or face view of a portion of a window with my improvement applied to it, a portion ofthe stile of the sash being removed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new and improved fastening for window-sashes 5 and it consists in the employment or use of two catches 7 or dogs,77 constructed and arranged in such a manner as to securely lock the sash at any desired point within the scope of its` movement, yet admit of the sash being liberated with the greatest facility in order to move or adjust it either up or down, and at the same time automatically lock it there at any given point, so as to prevent the sash being moved, raised, or lowered from the outer side of the window.
A represents a portion of a window-frame, and B a portion ot' the stile of a sash fitted in said frame, as usual. The edge of the stileB is notched or serrated as shown at a in Fig. l, or only every two or three inches, as may be preferred.
U represents a fastening composed of a metallic frame, b, in which two catches are vfitted loosely on rods or axles d d', said catches being composed of levers c c, which extend out in front ofy the stile B, so as to be operated freely by a person at the inner side of the window, and each lever having a lateral projection or catch, d, extending from it, which projections are kept in contact with the edge of the stile B, and in the notches therein by means of springs c, which are wound around the rods d and are connected to the projections d or they may be weighted so as t-o answer the same purpose.
These projections d, it will be seen by referring to Fig. 1, hold or lock the sash-one preventing it from being raised and the other preventing it from being lowered 5 and in order to liberate the sash the levers c c are pressed toward each other, which throws the projectionsH out of the notches and admits of the sash moving freely. It is not absolutely necessary that both of the projections d d be thrown out from the notches in the stile in order to move the sash. If the latter is to be raised, for instance, the upper projection need only be thrown out, and the lower one thrown out if the sash is to be lowered; but it is equally as convenient to operate both levers c c at once or by one motion of the hand as one of them, and herein consists an important part of my improvement. v
It will be seen that this fastening effectually prevents the sash being raised or lowered from the outer side of the window by its automatic action, and hence, when either sash is left open a t'ew inches, either top or bottom, for ventilation, it is by this action securely fastened.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat; entl. The sash-fastening in a sash-frame, with its catches d placed on separate rods d d', arranged and constructed as described, so that the point of contact with the stile B of the window is at the center of the frame of the `fastener b.
the notches on the stile Bof the sash in the manner and for the purpose herein specified.
' D. A. PRATT.
