Description

(No Model.)
B. I-LHOLMES. GAGE.
No. 549,513x Patented Nov. 12, 1895.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIJ AH H. HOLMES, OF PRAIRIE VIEV, TEXAS.
GAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming'part of Letters Patent No. 549,513, dated November 12, 1895.
Application filed- August 1, 1895. Serial N0- 55'7,880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIJAH H. HoLMEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Prairie View, in the county of Waller and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gages; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to gages.
The object or the invention is to provide a gage with simple means for holding the marking-point so that the person or marker can see the progress of the line he is scribing at all times without turning his gage forward, as in the old way, to see the spur, thus saving time, in that it is not necessary for the marker to lift his gage to see how near he is to the crosslines and without fear of scribing beyond boundary-lines of mortise or tenon.
With thisobj ect in View the invention consists of certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gage embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. 4
is a detail perspective View of the clamp removed from the beam.
In the drawings, 1 denotes abeam, one end of which is provided with a slot or saw-kerf 2.
3 denotes a clamp, formed with a tubular portion 4: and with parallel laterally-projecting wings 5, which are inserted into the sawkerf at the end of the beam and is held therein by a screw 6, which works transversely through the beam and draws the separated ends of the beam tightly against the wings 5, thus efiectively clamping the marker 7 in the sleeve portion 4 of the clamp.
The end of the beam near the markingpoint is 'chamfered somewhat concave on both sides of the point. The chamfer extends each way about five-sixteenths of an inch, thus allowing the operator at all times to see the point of the marker.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A gage comprising abeam having a sawkerf at its end, a clamp composed of a tube having laterally projecting parallel wings which are inserted in said kerf, a scribing point or marker located in the tubular portion of the clamp exposed to view, and means for clamping the separated ends of the beam tightly against the parallel wings of the clamp, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aftix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
