To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES A. EMANUEL- SON, of Wilmington, in the county of Will and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Galvanizing and Tempering Bath, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invent-ion relates to certain improvemen ts in that class of devices which are employed. for dipping metal in a liquid bathsuch as are employed for setting and cooling tires, tempering steel and the like, and galvanizing metal articles of all description; and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this characterhaving a tank provided with inclined trackways adapted to contain the liquid forming the bath and a platform havin g wheels engaging the track ways and adapted to carry the articles to be immersed in the liquid contained in the tank.
The invention also contemplates certain features of construction whereby certain advantages are obtained over other similar devices heretofore in use, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of referenceindicate corresponding parts in both the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the apparatus, showing the supporting-platform in its elevated position; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken through the device, as shown in Fig. 1, in the plane indicated by the line a: m in said figure.
In the views, 1 represents the tank, which is of a cylindrical form and may be of any desired size and dimensions. In the bottom of the'tank 1 is arranged a horizontal framework comprising timbers 2, extending transversely of the tank, and other timbers 3 3, set at right angles to the timbers 2 and mortised therein at their points of intersection. The framework comprising the timbers 2 and 3 is held removahly in place in the bottom of the tank by means of latches 31, pivoted at their central parts to lugs or projections fixed on the bottom of the tank between the timbers 3 3 and having their ends adapted, when said latches are turned to stand at right angles to said timbers 3, to project over the tops of the same, whereby the framework is held in place. By turning said latches 31 around, however, the framework may be removed from the tank.
At the extremity of the timbers 2 2 and 3 3 are arranged vertical brackets 4, adjacent to the side walls of the tank 1 and having their upper extremities formed with inclined endplates 5, to which are bolted or otherwise secured the trackways 6, formed of sheet metal of suitable strength and width, said trackways, of which there are four, as shown in Fig. 1, being inclined and curved downwardly in a spiral manner, as clearly indicated.
The supporting-platform for the articles to be dipped is formed of aframework comprising timbers 7 7 and 8 S, mortised into each other and extending at right angles to each other, as seen in Fig.1, in a manner similar to the timbers 2 2 and 3 8 of the horizontal frame atthe bottom of the tank, and adjacent to their extremities each pair of timbers 7 7 and 8 8, respectively, is united by a crosspiece 9, (see Fig. 2,) wherein is mounted the inner end of a shaft 10, the outer end of which is journaled in a bearing-piece 11, having arms 12, secured to the under sides of the several beams and having their central portions provided with depending bent fingers or tongues 14, adapted to engage under the respective trackways 6 in the tank 1, as clearly indicated in Fig. 2. On the outer end of the several shafts 10 are journaled the rollers 15, adapted to roll upon the respective tracks 6.
The frame of the platform forms a support for the cover-plate 16, of sheet metal, of circular form, and provided with a central circular perforation 17 and with a radial slot or perforation. 18 at one side, wherein plays a neck or stem formed upon the lower end of a post 19, said stem or neck being provided under the cover-plate 16 with a nut and washer 20, whereby the post may be adjustably secured at any point along the length of the slot 18. a
The post 19 extends vertically above the upper face of the platform and is bifurcated at its upper end, being provided with a longineck 22 of a slide-block 23, provided with a 'nut and washer 24, Whereby'said block may be adjustablysecured at any point desired along the length of the slot 21 in the post. To the inner side of the slide-block 23 is pivoted a lever 25, adapted to be manipulated by the hand of the operator and having a clamplug-surface 26 to engage an article'to be held upon the platform of the device-as, for example, the tire of a wheel or the like.
In order to hold the platform in its elevated position, I provide springs 27, secured to the outer sides of the tankl at suitable intervals and having at their free ends fingers 28, extending through perforations in the side walls of the tank into position to engage the timbers of the platform-frame, as indicated in Fig. 1, and said springs are provided at their ends with handles 29, whereby the fingers 28 may be withdrawn from their normal position engaging the said timbers, so as to release the platform and allow the same to move to its lowermost position. The platform is provided with chains 30 at oppositesides, whereby it may be raised or lowered. Y
In operation the article to be dipped in the bath contained in the tank 1 is arranged upon the platform and clamped in place by means of the cam -surface of the lever 25. The spring-fingers 28 are thereupon withdrawn from engagement with the timbers of the su p.- port-frame and said frame is permitted to descend by gravity,its rollers 15 traveling upon the trackways 6, as will be readily understood, until the said platform lies at the bottom of the tank 1, the articles held thereon being at this time immersed in the liquid containedin said tank. After a sufficient time has elapsed the supporting-platform is raised by drawing upon the chains 30, whereby the rollers or wheels 15 are caused to roll up the trackways 6 until the platform has again assumed the position seen in Fig. 1, whereupon the spring fingers 28 are again permitted to engagethe timbers of the support-frame and hold the platform in its elevated position.
The device constructed as above described is adapted for use for dipping articles of all kinds and for all purposes, and in order to adapt it for different uses it is evident that some change may be made in the form and arrangement. For instance, when used as a galvanizing-bath the Wooden timbers 2 3 and 7, 8, and 9 will of course be replaced by suitable metal braces and such other changes made as may be needful to adapt it for withstanding heat. These changes may be made Without material departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination With a tank, of a frame work removably secured to the interior of the said tank at the bottom thereof, brackets secured tothe said frame Work and located adjacent to the side walls of the said tank. inclined trackways secured to the upper ends of the said brackets and a platform having rollers adapted to engage the trackways in the tank,said platform being adapted to be submerged in a liquid contained in the tank by=the movement of the rollers along said inclined trackways, substantially as set forth.
,2. The combination with a tank having a series of spiral trackways, of a platforninaving a series of rollers arranged to engage and move along the said trackways, means for holding said platform in its uppermost position, a clamping lever adapted to hold the articles placed on said platform, and means for adjustably securing said clamping lever to the platform, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with a tank having a series of spiral trackways, of a platform having a series of rollers arranged to engage and move along said trackways, and springs secured to the outer side of the said tank and provided with fingers adapted to engage the platform frameto hold said platform in its uppermost position,substantially as set forth.
4. The combination of a'tank having inclined trackways, a platform having rollers adapted to engage the trackways in the tank, said platform being adapted to be submerged in a liquid contained in-the tank by the movement of the rollers along said inclined trackways,-said platform being provided with a slot extending outwardly from its center, a post adj ustably secured to the platform and movable along said slot, and a clamping lever adjustably secured to said post, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination of a tank having a series of spiral trackways, a platform having rollers arranged to engage said trackways, said platform being adapted to be submerged in the liquid contained in said tank and the rollersmoved along said trackways, means for holding said platform in its uppermost position, and tongues carried by the platform adjacent to the rollers and adapted to engage under the trackways, substantially as set forth.
