FRIEDRICH AUGUST WIENAND, OF PFORZHEIM, GERMANY.
ARTIFICIAL TOOTH. I
$PECIFIGATION forming part Of Letters Fatent Nb. 548,106, dated October 15, 1895.
Application filed February 19, 1894. Serial No. 500,812. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH AUGUST WIENAND, a subject of the Grand Duke of Baden, residing at Pforzheim, in the Grand Duchy of Baden, German Empire, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fastening Artificial Teeth, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention consists of a device for fastening the artificial teeth to the mouthplate by means of which greater stability shall be given to the same than heretofore.
The object of the present invention is to attain a durable and fast attachment of the teeth to the plate, and I attain this objectby means of a small metallic plate dovetailed at one end and having at the projecting end an eye which is embedded in the mass of which the mouth-plate is made-efor instance, caoutchouc, celluloid, and the like. In the case of gold mouth-plates I only allow a narrow ledge of the plate to extend out of the tooth and solder the same into a second plate. In order to make the present specification more easily intelligible, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters denote similar parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a back elevation of the tooth provided with the attachment-plate; Fig. 2, a vertical section on line M M in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a plan of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a horizontal section on line N N, Fig. 1; Fig. 5, a vertical section through the tooth and plate, showing the manner of attachment of the tooth to the mouth-plate. Fig. 6 shows a side elevation of a tooth with attachment-plate and a back view of the attachment-plate as arranged for metallic mouth-plates. Fig. 7 shows in vertical and horizontal section a tooth with attachment-plate in course of preparation; and Fig. 8, in rear elevation, vertical and horizontal sections, an artificial tooth with plate soldered thereto.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 5, the tooth c is provided with a backwardlyextending attachment-plate having a dovetail end (1 and a projecting eye A, as also an intermediate ledge 17. The dovetail end at of this plate is pressed into the mass of which the tooth is made while the same is in a soft condition, and then burned fast into the said tooth. The extending eye A and ledge b are both embedded in the mouth-plate, as shown at Fig. 5, whereby the material of which the said mouth-plate is made fills out the eye A, securely holding the tooth in position in the plate. In order to further prevent a loosening of the tooth, the same is provided at its upper end with indentations B B, extending slantingly inward toward each other, Fig. 3, and into which the mass of which the mouth-plate is made is pressed, thus securely holding the tooth in position and preventing the same from twisting.
For attaching teeth on my system to metal (gold) month-plates I first fix the plate A b cl in the tooth in the manner described. I then place a second plate D, previously perforated to fit over the ledge or shoulder 19, as shown at Fig. 6, over the said shoulder, so that the same lies flat against the rear side of the tooth, and solder the said plate onto the shoulder b, after which the projecting part of the eye is cut off and the back of the plate D filed down and finished.
The plateA b d is advantageously made of platinum.
I claim as my invention The combination of a tooth having embedded therein the dovetail end of a plate; a ledge 11 to said plate to extend out of said tooth, and a plate D perforated as specified to fit over said projecting ledge and lie against the rear side of the tooth and means for afiixing said plate D to the said ledge b, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRIEDRICH AUGUST WIENAND.
