To ail whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NELLIE BROWN, a citi-1 zen of the United States, residing at Pueblo, in the county of Pueblo and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Bag and Parcel Fastener, of which the followingisaspecilication.

My invention relates to bag and parcel fasi teners adapted for securing packages, parcels, &c., without the use of cord, as in the ordinary practice, and the object in view is to provide a device adapted to be applied with facility and so constructed as to secure the open end or loose edges of a bag or package without the risk of displacement by handling.

Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a fastener constructed in accordance with my invention applied in the operative position to a bag, such as those used for groceries. Fig. 2 is a view of the opposite side of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the blank prior to folding the same to engage a bag 'or package. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4 4 of Fig. 1.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

The improved fastener is struck from a single blank of pliable sheet metal, preferably tin or its equivalent, and it comprises a parallel-sided strip 1 and a series of lateral ears 2, the extremities of the strip being extended beyond the terminal lateral ears to form end ears 3, and the inner surface of the strip and ears is spurred, as shown at 4. These spurs are preferably formed by punching the blank to form rou gh-ed ged projections on thesurface thereof.

The fastener is applied to a bag or package by placing the body portion of the strip in contact with one side of the folded edge of the same, folding the extremities of the strip or the terminal ears upon the body portion of the strip and pressing the same to cause the spurs to engage the material of the bag, and finally folding the lateral ears downward upon the surface of the bag, as indicated in Fig. 1. The iiexibility of the material from which the fastener is struck provides for bending the ears with facility, and at the same time the ears have suiiicient strength to successfully resist the ordinary strains to which the fastener is subjected during the handling of the package.

The fastener may be constructed of any desirable size and may be provided with any preferred number of ears, having a suitable number of spurs to properly engage the material of the bag or container, and itis obvious that thefastener may be applied and secured with less loss of time than the ordinary tyingcords employed for a similar purpose.

Having described my invention, what Iv claim is l. As an article of manufacture, a fastener for the purpose named comprising an integral blank struck from pliable sheet metal and having a longitudinal strip or body portion and a plurality of terminal and lateral ears provided upon their inner surfaces with spurs, said ears being adapted to be folded upon the strip or body portion of the fastener to engage the free edges of a bag or container, substan tially as specified.

A bag fastener of pliable metal having a longitudinal strip or body portion, terminal ears arranged in alignment with the body portion, and lateral ears arranged at the ends and at an intermediate point of the body portion, said terminal and lateral ears being provided, upon their inner surfaces with spurs projecting beyondl the inner surface of the fastener and formed by punching the same, the terminal ears being adapted to be folded parallel with the body portion to bear against the bag, the end lateral ears being adapted to be folded upon the outer surfaces of the terminal ears, and the intermediate ear being
