To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I HOWARD G. PETERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Douglas, in the county of Converse and State of Wyoming, have invented a new and luseful Machine for Making Loops, of which the lfollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in machines for making harness and other loops.
The object of the present invention is 'to provide a simple and effective machine for clinching and securing the contiguous ends of leather loops such as are used in the manufacture of harness.
Y A further object of the invention is to provide said machine with a novel form of springclamping arm for holding the ends of the loop while the die is operating upon the clincher.
A further object is to provide means whereby said spring-clamping arm may be adjusted as to its position and tension.
To accomplish the Objects above enumerated the invention consists in certain novel features and details of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, Yillustrated in the drawings, v and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of thecomplete machine constructed in accordance with the present invention, being shown in the act of clinching a loop. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sec? tion through the machine, illustrating the operation of the machine and the function of the several parts thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the grooved anvil. Fig. l is a similar view of the spring-clamping arm. Fig. 5 is a similar View of theplunger, its die, and the knuckle-link by means of which the plunger is attached to the operating-lever. Fig. 6 is a similar view of one of the metallic clinchers. Fig. 7 is a sectional view in one of the completed loops, showing the manner in which the clincher is applied thereto.

C-shaped frame preferably cast in a single piece and formed in the process of manufacture with suitable base-anges 2, which are perforated, as shown, adapting the device as p ja whole to be secured to a table or other suitable support. At the forward end of the overhanging arm of the main frame the laitter is provided with a vertical perforation 3, which serves as abearing for a verticallymovable plunger 4, said plunger being pivotally connected at its upper end to the operating -lever 5 by means of an interposed knuckle or link 6. The upper end of the plunger 11 is bifurcated, as shown, and embraces a downwardly-projecting tongue 7 on the knuckle or link 6, being connected therewith by means of a pivotal pin 8. The upper end of the knuckle or link 6 is likewise slotted or bifurcated, adapting it to embrace a lug 9, pendent from the lower face of the operating-lever 5, being pivoted thereto by means of a pin 10. The lower end of the plunger is provided with a cylindrical socket into which is iitted the tapering shank of a die 12, said die being connected with the plunger by means of a dowel-pin 13, as shown, lthus enabling the die to be removed, when desired, and replaced by another die of different size or shape. The operating-lever 5 may be of any desired size and length for affording the desired leverage, and is provided at its rear end with a perforated ear or exe tension 14, which is adapted to be received in a corresponding socket 16 in the overhanging arm of the frame 1, being secured therein by means of apivotal pin 17.
To the base of the main framel is secured an anvil 18. Said anvil may be fixedly attached to the main frame in any preferred or convenient manner and is provided with a forwardly-extending arm or rest 19, the upper face of which is provided with a pair of parallel grooves 20, said grooves merging into each other, as indicated, in such manner as to form practically one groove with a central ridge, said ridge being located beneath the plane of the upper surface of said forwardlyextending arm 19. The anvil is further provided with a rearwardly-extending arm 21, which has aniupward extension l22 at the rear end, said extension being slottedor bifurcated,

as shown, for the purpose of receiving a downwardly-projecting ear or lug 23 on the rear end of a forwardly-extending spring-clamping arm. The extension 22 on the anvil and the lug or ear 23 on the clamping-arm are provided with horizontally-aligned perforations for the reception of a connecting-pin 24, the perforation in the ear or lug 23 for the reception of said pin 24 being elongated vertically for permitting the rear end of the clampingarm to be adjusted in height for a purpose that will appear.`
The spring-clamping arm designated aia-25 is provided adjacent to its forward end with a rectangular aperture 26, through which the die carried by the plunger is adapted to op# erate upon the clincher. In advance of said aperture in the clamping-arm the latter is pro` vided with a pair of oppositely inclined or flaring extensions or wings 27, which are preferably rounded on their under faces, as indicated, said win gs or extensions projecting laterally upon either side of the grooved arm of the anvil and being adapted to be operated purpose of elevating the clamping-arm to facilitate the insertion of the ends of the leather loop. The pressure with which the clampingarm is caused to bear upon the loop may be regulated by means of a set-screw 28, passing through said clamping-arm and engaging the anvil. In order to accommodate material of diierent thicknesses between the anvil and the clamping-arm the rear end of said clampvertical slot in its lug 23, before referred to. The loop thus formed is d 5, the die at the lower end of theplunger forces the metallic clincher through the leather, the points, by reason of the particular shape of the double groove described, being turned or deflected inward beneath the leather and withl in the loop and securely and firmly clinched thereto, as indicated in Fig. 7. The loop now being complete, the same may be removed by sliding it forwardly olf the grooved arm of the anvil.
It will be apparent that various changes in i the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction .may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, `isl. In a machine for making loops, an anvil provided with a forwardly extending grooved arm, a spring clamping arm located above said grooved arm, and the flaring extensions on said clamping arm for facilitating the elevation thereof, substantially as described. upon by the thumbs of either hand for the l 1 provided with a grooved face, in combination with a spring clamping arm located opposite g to said grooved face and provided with an aperture for the reception and passage of the j die, and also provided with oppositely flaring `wings or extensionsv for facilitating the lifting of the clamping arm, and means for adjustng the tension of said arm, substantially as described.
