H. J. 8; W. J. TAYLOR. PLUMBERS TORCH. No. 542,451. Patented July 9, 1895.
UNITED STATES PATENT Fries.
HENRY J. TAYLOR AND WILLIAM J. TAYLOR, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENN- SYLVANIA.
PLUMBERS TORCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,451, dated July 9, 1895. App c fi February 19,1895- Serial No. 533,979- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that We, HENRY J. TAYLOR and WILLIAM J. TAYLOR, citizens of the United States, both residing in the city and countyofPhiladelphia,State ofPennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plumbers Torches, which improvementis fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
Our invention relates to a plumbers torch; and it consists of a blow-pipe attachment therefor which is readily adjustable and is prevented from being wrenched off, owing to the attachment of said pipe to a sleeve which is movable on the Wick-tube of said torch and to a boss on the body of the torch, said boss and sleeve serving as guides for said pipe.
It further consists of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a plumbers torch embodying our invention. Fig. 2 represents a plan view thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
Referring to the drawings, A' designates the body of the torch, and B the wick-tube thereof, the Wick being shown at O. The said tube has a sleeve D, whose lower portion D is made flaring and which slides freely on said tube and has attached to it the air-pipe E, whose top F is closed, said pipe, however, being provided with a vent G near said top, at apoint adjacent to said tube. The said air-pipe E has an offset at H, below which it extends down the side of the bodyA, its lower portion passing freely through the boss J, which serves as a guide, and is provided with a thumb-screw K, which maybe tightened against said pipe, whereby the latter and the collar D can be adjusted and held at any required height relative to the wick, said airpipe having the function of a blow-pipe, as will be hereinafter explained.
L designates a piece of rubber tubing, which is attached to the end of said air-pipe and which may or may not be provided with a suitable mouthpiece.
M designates a cap for extinguishing the flame.
The operation is as follows: The wick 0 having been ignited the air-pipe E is adjusted until the vent G thereof is at the proper place, relatively to the wick, and the screw K is then tightened, it being noticed that the sleeve D, to 'whichthe upper portion of the air-pipe is attached, effectually prevents the same from displacement relative to the flame; and if now the ignited Wick be brought near the object to be heated or melted and the operator blows through the tubing L and the pipeEv a hot flame of the greatest intensity will be concentrated upon the desired point, as is evident, it being noticed that the sleeve and boss serve as guides for the air-pipe and prevent the same from being readily displaced or wrenched from the torch. As the wick burns down the vent G can be adjusted rela tive thereto withgreat exactness.
By making the sleeve D flaring at its lower portion D, the same can be readily slipped over the wick without being obstructed by the fibers thereof, as is evident.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y 1. A plumbers torch consisting of a body, a wick-tube, a sleeve movable on said tube, an air pipe secured to said sleeve, a guiding boss on said body, and a tightening screwon said boss, said pipe being closed at top and provided with a vent in its side, and the parts combined substantially as described.
2. A plumbers torch consisting of a body with a boss on its side, a wick tube, a sleeve movable on said tube, an air pipe secured to said sleeve and having a set-off adapting it to be guided in said boss on saidbody, and a thumb screw for clamping said pipe in said boss, said pipe having a closed top and an air vent in its side, said parts being combined substantially as described.
HENRY J. TAYLOR. WILLIAM J. TAYLOR.
