Be it known that I, EDWARD W. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bay City, in the county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in NVood-I-Iogs, of `which the following is a speciication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention consists in the construction of asupporting-frame, in which a cutting-cylinder is journaled having a hood which incloses the top of the cutting-cylinder and has formed integral therewith the feed-spout and also an adjustable bottom having throatplates; further, in the construction of the throat-plate, and, further, in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical cen tral longitudinal section through a machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is adetached `perspective view of the cutter head or cylinder; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the cylinder, illustrating the manner of securing the cutting-teeth in position.
In the prior state of the art wood-hogs have been manufactured which embody a casing and a revolving cutter supported therein, the
` casing having a hood hinged at one side and adapted to close the top of the cylinder; but in these constructions the throat-plate has been supported upon the frame of the machine, and as these throat-plates were necessarily arranged at or aboutthe middle of the cylinder such support presented an obstacle which prevented the ready removal of the cylinder from the machine.
By arranging, as I do, the throat-plate upon the feed-spout and forming the feeding-spout with the hood practically the entire side can be opened by opening the hood, which gives me easy and complete access to the cutter for repair or removal. My construction also enables me to build the throat-plate in such a manner that it may be either attached or detached quickly, and so that one or more throatplates or bed-plate knives may be employed, and so that the machine having asingle knife of this kind may be transferred quickly and with little expense into a machine having a multiple of such knives.
A is the base, preferably rectangular and having on the sides bearings for the shaft B, on which is secured the cylindrical cutterhead C. This head has apertures D, in front ot which are the recesses or grooves E to prevent clogging of the teeth F with the chips. On the inner face of the cylinder, around the apertures, are the lugs G, and at the ends of the cylinder are the ears H, in line with the lugs, these lugs and ears being apertured in line to receive the securing-bolt I,which passes through apertures in the stems J of the cutters F, the heads of which are on the outer face of the cylinder, as plainly shown in Fig. l. These teeth or cutters are staggered, and all the teeth combined preferably make a single clean cut the width of the cylinder, or nearly so.
L is a hood or cover hinged to the rear end of the frame, adapted to inclose the top of the cylinder. This hood at the end opposite the hinge is provided with the inclined spout M, the' lower edges of which rest upon the flanges N on lthe base. Within this spout is supported the bed-plate-knife support O, which comprises the side plates P, having segmental apertures a for the securingbolts b, and the bed-plates, of which there may be one, as c, or a second one c. By forming the slots a in the parts O the bed-plates may be moved up and dow-n, or in a lateral direction substantially at right angles tothe length. On each bed-plate is supported the bed-plate knife d, adjustable longitudinally by means of the screw-bolts e.
By having the feed-spout complete on the hood, when the hood is raised the wheel can readily be rolled out for renewals and repair.
By having a detachable bed-plate support inthe spout I can send out a machine with a single bed-plate knife; and if at any time a double knife is required, can simply detach one plate and insert one with the knives. The space between the knives is lled by a flange f, which preferably connects the side plates P.
