DEVICE FOR APPLYING ADHESlVES -TO EDG ES OF WRAPPERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No; 540,717, dated. June 11, 1895.
- Application filed se iem trimsei. strain. 523,008. (No model.)
Be it known that I, WILBER A. K. CAMP BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eldora, in the county of Hardin and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Applying Adhesive to the Edges of Wrappers; and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others 'skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to devices for applying paste or other adhesive to the edges of wrappers for wrapping newspapers for the mails, and among the objects in view is to provide a simple, inexpensive and efficient de-' vice for applying adhesive to the edges of newspapers or other wrappers whereby a considerable saving in time and expense is effected, and with the above and other objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement-and combination of parts as hereinafter fully described, illus trated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings,- Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating my device in use. Fig. 2 is a-vertical longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the paste fountain or receptacle. Fig. 4 is a rear view of the device.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a base or board 1 upon which the sheets or wrappers to be pasted are laid and which board toward one end is provided upon opposite sides with vertical standards 2, which upon their inner faces are grooved as at 3.-
Wire guides 5' carried by said receptacle is a suitable brush 6, which is adapted to slide vertically. The receptacle is provided with ribs 6 adapted to slide within the grooves 3 of the standards.
In'ordcr to hold the brush down against the wrappers at all times, and thus accommodate itself to the diminishing quantity of Wrappers, any suitable means may be employed, as for instance a set-screw 7 working within a metallic plate 8 secured to the standards 2,
said set screw being adapted to bear against the brush head so as to regulate the brush in its vertical movements; or I may provide the receptacle with openings 13 through which I can insert a pin 14 into previously provided sockets in the brush-head. A suitable opening 10 is formed in the rear side of the receptacle inrear of the brush and adapted to be closed or partially so by a slide 11 to govern the flow of paste on to the wrappers.
In order that the paste receptacle may not retain or scrape off any paste from the wrappers as they are pasted, I provide said receptacle upon each side and at any suitable point in rear of the brush with buttons or protuberances 12 which rest upon the topmost wrapper whereby the bottom edge of the receptacle will be lifted clear of the paste. This is a very desirable feature of my invention.
The operation of my invention may be briefly described as followsz-The wrapper to be pasted having been placed upon the board 1, and over the pin, the set-screw 7 is then adjusted so as to cause the brush to bear on the wrappers. The slide 11 is raised to allow the paste to flow on to the topmost wrapper. The newspaper to be wrapped is then placed in a folded condition uponthe wrapper and the latter rolled around the paper at the same time being drawn forward and torn from the pin, and the brush then evenly spreads the paste upon the end of the wrapper which end I is finally pasted down and another newspa- Fper may then be wrapped in the next succeed- 1. The combination with a base board, and standards carried thereby, of a paste receptacle vertically adjustable in said standards, and having an outlet for the paste, a slide governing the'fiow of paste through said outlet and a brush vertically adjustable within said receptacle, and means for adjusting said brush, as described for the purpose specified.
2. The combination with a base board and standards carried thereby, of a paste receptacle vertically adjustable in said standards and provided with an outlet for the paste, a brush carried by the receptacle, and projections on the receptacle adapted to rest on the Wrappers to lift the receptacle above the same, for the purpose specified.
