UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
LOUIS SOHNFELD, OF HANOVER, GERMANY.
CLOSET-SEAT COVER OR LID.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 538,388, dated April 30, 1895.
Application filed August 10, 1893. Serial No. 482,855. `(No model.) Patented in France June 2'7, 1893, No. 231,136, and in Bell gium June 27,1893,No. 105,286.
To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, Louis SCHNEELD, of Hanover, in the German Empire, have invented a new and useful Closet-Seat Cover or Lid, (patented in France, No. 231,136, dated June 27, 1893, and in Belgium, No. 105,286, dated June 27, 1893,) of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention is an improvement in'closet seat covers and consists in the novel features hereinafter fully described reference being had to the accompanying drawings which show one form in which I have contemplated embodying my invention and said invention is fully disclosed in the following description and claim.
Referring to said drawings, Figure 1 represents a sectional View of a closet-seat cover constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
In the drawingsm represents the closet bowl above which is the closet seat e constructed in the usual manner. To the rear part of the seat ea hinged frame d is pivoted at c said frame conforming to the shape of the seat e as shown in dotted lines Fig. 2. I prefer to pivot the frame d by means of a rod g passing through the ends of the frame d and through brackets g secured to the seat e. The front portion of the frame d is of course semi-circular and is provided with an inclined board h which covers the front portion of the closet seat e when the frame is in a horizontal position thereby protecting the front portion of the seat from becoming soiled. The rear portion ofy the frame d is entirely open and gives free access to the bowl m. The board h which I term the drip board is inclined from front to rear as shownin Fig. l and will thus conduct any duid falling upon it into the bowl m.
Above the frame d is the cover proper a, which preferably has a side frame b secured thereto, of the same size and shape as the frame d so as to rest directly on the frame d when the cover is down. The cover c is provided with ears i c' which are pivotally connected in this instance to similar ears on the framel d by pivotsf. See Fig. l. The front edge of the framed is provided with a spring Z which projects upwardly through a notch cut in the front edge of the cover a., and is formed into a handle or finger lift at its upper end as shown in Fig. l. This spring l is Yprovided with a tooth or lug Z which engages a portion of the cover, as for instance the upper edge of the cover frame b, the cover a being suitably recessed to allow the tooth to engage said frame b, as shown.
Springs o o are interposed between the frame d and cover a. In this instance I have shown a spring o at each side of the cover a, coiled about the rod `g and having one end secured to the frame b of the cover a, and the other end secured to the frame d. It will thus be seen that when the cover is forced down until the tooth Z engages it, it will be held in that position.
When it is desired to use the bowl as a urinal, the finger pull of spring Z is drawn forward until the tooth Z releases the cover a, which will then be raised into the position shown in dotted lines Fig. 1. In this position the drip board will protect the seat c and will conduct any fluid falling upon it into the bowl, thus preventing the soiling of the seat.
When it is desired to have access to the seat e, the finger pull is lifted vertically lifting both the cover a and frame d, and thus exposing the closet seat.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a closet seat, of the hingedopen frame provided with a drip board covering the front portion of said seat opening, the pivoted cover, a spring catch secured to said frame and having a part for engaging the cover, and a spring interposed between said frame and cover, substantially as described.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
-LOUIS SOHONFELD.
