UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JONATHAN J. Moons, or THoRNTowN, INDIANA.
SPARK-ARRESTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 537,218, dated April 9, 1895.
Application filed September 4,1894. Serial No. 521,993. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JONATHAN J. MooRE,, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thorntown, in the county of Boone and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spark-Arrestors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved sparkarrester for use on the smoke-stacks of traction-engines, or locomotives; V
The object of my improvement is to combine, in connection with wire-cloth screens so arrranged as to present the least resistance to the passage of smoke and gases from the smokestack, means for intercepting the sparks and concentrating them in small masses where they will be exposed to the influence of a strong draft, so that a complete combustion of the sparks takes place within the spark-arrester.
The accompanying drawing illustrates my invention.
The figure represents a central vertical section of the upper portion of the smoke-stack, and the spark-arrester thereon.
In the drawing, 2 indicates an annular flange or collar which is secured to the smoke-stack, 3, near its top. Said flange is provided, at one edge, with a projecting lug, 4, to which the spark-arrester is hinged, and at the opposite edge with a projecting lug, 5, which supports the lower edge of the spark'arrester.
The spark-arrester consists of three sections of wire-cloth, or netting. The outer section, 6, consists of a straight cylinder of wire netting, of considerably larger diameter than the smoke-stack, open at both ends, and secured at its lower end to a metallic band, 7, which fits nicely over the outer edge of the flange 2, and is hinged thereto at 8. The second section of wire netting is in the form of a hollow, inverted truncated cone 9, having its larger end fitting nicely inside the cylindrical section, and riveted thereto at the top. The lower and smaller end of said cone is of about the same diameter as the smoke-stack and is suspended concentrically with and a shortd istance above the upper end of the stack, so that there is free communication between the mouth of the smoke-stack and the tapering annular space,
10, which is formed between sections 6 and 9. The third section of wire-netting is in the form of a hollow cone, 11, having its base of such diameter as to fit nicely within the smaller end of cone 9, to which it is secured. The
I upper 'end'of cone 11 is, preferably, slightly truncated, and is closed. To that side of the outer section which is hinged to the flange 2,
.is secured an eye 12. to which is attached a 'rod, 13, which extends to the cab of the engine, and is used to swing the spark-arrester into or out of operative position.
In operation, the products of combustion escaping'from the smoke-stack pass into the annular space 10, and also into the cone 11, passing freely through the meshes of the several sections of wire netting. The unburned particles forming the sparks, are carried into and collect in the acute angles formed at the top of space 10 and the top of cone 11. The
sparks being thus confined in small masses,
and exposed to the air and draft on all sides, are quickly consumed and fall as ashes, on to flange 2.
I claim as my invention- The above described spark-arrester, consisting of the annular flange adapted to be secured to a smoke-stack, the straight cylindrical section of wire-netting mounted on said flange, the hollow tapering section of wirenetting secured at its larger end to the upper edge of said straight section and projecting downward therein, and the hollow conical wire-netting section secured at its larger end to the smaller end of said tapering section and projecting upward therein, all combined and arranged to co-operate in the manner set forth.
JONATHAN J. MOORE. Witnesses:
