To all whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, TARGE G. MANDT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stoughton, in the coun-ty of Dane and State'of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined End- Gate and Shoveling-Board; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which`it appertainsto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in combined end-gates and shoveling boards for wagons, which shall possess superior advantages with respect to simplicity in construction andefticiency in operation.-
The object of the invention is to provide an improved device of the above character which can be readily closed and securely locked forming an end-gate, and which, when desired can be let down at an approximately'horizontal position to form a shoveling-board, and securely` locked in such position by a simple pushing movement, the lower end of the end gate butting up against the end of the wagon body, making a tight and even joint, presenting no projecting edges or other obstructions, and preventing the escape of any loose grain between the joint. The gate can also be let down into a vertical position to enable the wagon to be backed closeup to a building, car or other object; and as there is no positive engagement between the end-gate and wagon, the former can be readily removed or entirely disconnected from the wagon, when desired.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of aportion of a farm Wagon showing my improved combined end-gate and shoveling board, in the position. it occupies when used as a shoveling board. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, showing the end-gate closed. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing it let down to form a shoveling board. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the end gate let down into a Vertical position. Fig. 5 is a detail view of one of the end plates of the end gate. Fig. 6 is a similar view of one of the side plates secured to the wagon box or body. Fig. 7 is a perspective View of the plate shown in Fig. 5, looking from the opposite side.
In the said drawings the reference numeral 1 designates the sides of the Wagon box or body andl 2 the sides of the top box, the latter being provided with a tail-board or end gate 3. To the said sides 2 at their rear ends are secured plates 4, having formed therewith forwardly extending arms or lugs 5, provided A with loops 6. Secured to the ends of the tail board 3 are plates 7, which when the tail board is in place, overlap the plates 4, and pivoted to said plates 7 are hooks 8, provided with handles 9. By turning these handles forwardly the hooks will engage with the loops 6 and securely lock the tail-board in place. The handles also serve as holds in connecting or disconnecting the tail-board.
To the rear ends of the sides 1 of the box or body proper of the wagon are secured side plates 12, each consisting of the vertical portion 13 having its rear edge turned inwardly at a right angle forming a flange 14 which abnts against the rear edge of said sides, said plates 12 being secured to the box or body by means of bolts 15, or other fastening devices. At the lower end the plate is provided or formed with an inwardly extending lug 16With a hole or aperture 17 therein through which passes a bolt also passing through the bottom 18 of the box. Near its upper end the plate is formed with a forwardly extending arm 19, provided with a loop 20. Near the lower end on the outside thereof, the plates 12 are formed with studs 21 and are also formed with rearwardly projecting extensions 23, having curved slots 24, to receive the pivots or journals of the end gate hereinafter described. One of these extensions is formed with a vertical slot 25, intersectin g with the slot 24, and provided with an inwardly extending bracket consisting of a curved metal plate 26, the ends of which are secured to the inner side of the said extension.
The numeral 27 designates the end gate, consisting of a rectangular board or boards, provided at each end with plates 29 which are approximately triangular in shape, and are formed with vertical tlanges 30 at right angles IOO thereto, which abut against the end gate and are secured thereto by means of bolts 3l or other fastening devices. The lower ends ot' these plates are formed with inwardly extending studs or journals 32 which engage with the slots 24, of the plates l2. They are also formed with hooks 33, strengthened by means of ribs 34, which hooks are adapted to engage under the studs 2l, and hold the end gate in position, when turned down for use as a shoveling board.
Formed with the plates 29, near the upper ends thereof, are outwardly extending studs 35, on which are pivoted or journaled hooks 36,' provided with handles 37, by which they are actuated to engage with the loops on the plates 12. These handles also serve as handholds in opening, closing, and removing, and replacing the end-gate, being bent outwardly nearly to the pivotal point and having their ends turned inwardly forming lugs which bear against the plate, so that there will be a space between the handle and the plates, affording room for the lingers to grasp the handle.
The operation is as follows: When the endgate is closed the hooks 36 are engaged with the loops 20, thereby securely locking it in position. To convert the end-gateinto a shoveling board, the operator grasps the handles 37, and pulls them rearwardly disengaging the hooks from the loops and pulling the end gate down, the studs 32 turning in the slots 24, ofthe plate l2. Then the end-gate is thus let down to the proper position or angle with respect to the wagon box, it is pushed inwardly, the studs 32 slidingin the slots until the hooked ends 33 of the plates pass under the studs or stops 2l. By now letting go of the handles, the said hooks 33 will engage with studs 2l and hold the end gate in position, the lower edge of the gate and the end of the wagon box making a close and even joint. To allow the gate to assume a vertical position, it is pulled outward so as to disengage the hooks 33, from the studs 2l, when it will drop down as seen in Fig. 4.
To remove the end gate from the wagon, it
is partly let down and then moved, so that the stud 32 on one of the end-plates 28 will register with the vertical slot 25, ot' the said plate. This end of the gate is then raised, the stud passing out through said slot. The gate is then shifted laterally causing the stud at the other end to be disconnected from its slot 24.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim isl. The combination with a wagon box having side plates at the rear end formed with outwardly projecting studs or stops, and rearwardly projecting extensions formed with slots, of the end gate, the plates at each end thereof having hooks adapted to engage with said studs or stops, and inwardly extending journals engaging with said slots, substantially as and for the purpose specied.
2. The combination with a wagon box hav-- ing side plates at the rear end formed with outwardly projecting studs or stops and rearwardly projecting extensions having slots, and one of ,said plates formed with avertical slot intersecting the slot in the extension and the inwardly extending curved plate, of the end gate, the plate at each end thereof formed with a hook and an inwardly extending journal engaging with the slots in said exten" sions, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. As an improved article, an end-plate for a wagon formed with an outwardly extending stud and an extension provided with a slot, substantially as described.
4L. As an improved article, an end plate for an end gate of a Wagon comprising the triangular wing, theyertical flange, the inwardly extendingjournal, and the hook,substantially as described.
