Description

W. HfiBNER.
SPITTOON.
No. 537,115. Patented Apr. 9, 1895.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILHELM HIIBNER, OF BERLIN, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO BERNHARD KRIIGER, OF SAME PLACE.
SPITTOON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 537,115, dated April 9, 1895.
Application filed August 15, 1894. $erial No. 520,414. (No model.)
tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a frame for spittoons and its object is to provide the same with mechanical self-acting covers in such manner as to keep them closed. and satisfy all hygienic and aesthetic requirements.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side view of the spitto'on holder showingthe lid partially raised. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the spittoon holder.
The frame consists of a wire ring or upon which the spittoon is suspended by its upper rim, and which is carried on four feet 0, c 0 0 Two of these latter a c are provided with eyelets d in which the cover-frame b is fixed by means of bent wire arms or hooks g. One of these arms is provided in a suitable manner with a long oval eyelet or slot It also made of wire and projecting backward, in which the free end of a wire tread-lever f is adapted to engage. This tread-lever, which is formed out of the prolongation of the foot 0 and hangs thereon by a short arm 6, resting upon the fioor with a loop f, possesses on account of this mode of construction, a spring action so that the end f is made to exert an upward pressure whereby the cover is automatically closed.
When the cover is to be opened all that is required is to put ones foot'on the tread-lever f and press it downward as'it is shown in Fig.
2 by dotted lines, so that the free end f of the tread-lever f acting on the oval loop or eye h raises the cover frame in the direction of the arrow.
The frames a and b can be covered in any ornamental manner by any suitable material, according to fancy, for which ladies work is especially suited; but they may also be covered with sheet-metal, papier mach, pasteboard, &c., with or without ornamentation, varnish, paint, 85c.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is- 1. In a spittoon' holder, the combination, with a ring a provided with feet and adapted to support a" removable spittoon, of a lid for the spittoon hinged to the rear feet of the frame and provided with the rearwardly projecting eyelet h, and a spring tread lever connected to one of the frontfeet and having its rear end sliding in the said eyelet, substantially as set forth.
2. In a spittoon holder, the combination, with a ring a provided with feet and adapted to support a removable spittoon, of a lid for the spittoon hinged to the rear feet of the frame and provided with the eyelet h of twisted wire, and a spring tread lever formed of a prolongation of one of the front feet and provided with a loop f bearing on the ground and an end sliding in the said eyelet, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILIIELM HUBNER.
