ANCHORi-STAKE AND GAGE FOR CHECK-'ROWWIRES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,331, dated March 26, 1895. Application filed January 12, 1895. Serial No. 534,684- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE ISAAC FANNIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sibley, in the county of Ford and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Anchor-Stake and Gage for Check-Row Wires, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an anchor stake and gage for check-row wires used in connection with corn-planters, and the objects in View are to provide an anchor stake adapted to be arranged at the end of a row and, provided with means for causing the necessary tension in the check row wire; to provide means for ascertaining the tension of the Wire; and furthermore, to provide means for spacing the stake from the last row in order that uniformity of distance between the rows may be secured.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

lever may be locked at the desired adjustment. Said pawl is connected to a small triplever 7 whereby it may be disengaged from the rack to allow adjustment of the lever.
Connected to the opposite end of the lever by means of a hook 8 engaging an opening 9 in the lever, is a tension device 10, having parallel side plates or cheeks 11 between which is arranged to slide a guide-block 12, and connected to this guide-block and operating in an opening 13 in the opposite end of the frame from said book 8 is a stem 14 provided with a terminal hook 15. Coiled upon said stem within the frame and between the guide-block and the opposite end of the frame is a spring 16, and attached to the guidebloek and extending through a slot 17 in one of the side plates or cheeks of the frame, is a pointer 18 which operates in connection with a scale 19.
In connection with the above apparatus I employ a brace 20 which is connected at its upper end to the stake by means of an eye or staple 21, said brace being designed to prevent the inclination of the stake under the strain caused by tightening the check-row wire.
Connected to the foot-rest 2 which is arranged at one side of the stake, is a chain or cord 22 to the free end of which is attached a pin 23 adapted to be inserted in the soil or to serve as a marker or gage to indicate the position of a new row with relation to one which has been previously marked. The length of the chain or cord regulates the intervals between the rows.
The operation of the device may be readily understood from the foregoing description, and it will be seen that it can be adjusted with. facility and without loss of time to secure uniformity of distance between the rows and the necessary tension of the wire to insure accurate operation of the planting mechan-- ism, and it is obvious, that various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination of a stake, and means for securing the same in an upright position, a lever fulcrumed upon the stake, means for locking the lever at the desired adjustment, and a tension indicating device carried by the lever and adapted to be connected to a check-row wire, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of a stake, a brace for supporting the same in an upright position,
a lever fulcrumed upon the stake, means for locking the lever at the desired adjustment, and a tension device connected to the lever and comprising a frame, a hook attached to one end of the frame to engage an openingin a stem connected to the guide-block and tersired interval between adjacent rows, subthelever,aguide-block arrangedin the frame, thelength of which corresponds with the tie minatin'g in a hook'for engagement with a stantially as specified.
