Description
(No Model.)
P. J. LOWNDES. BUTGHERS GLEAVER.
Patented Mar. 19, 1895.
WITNESSES: INVENTOR 1 W Jlwwma Q BY HIS ATTORNEY NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDRIOK J. LOWNDES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO JOSEPH B.
LOWNDES, OF SAME PLACE.
BUTCHERS CLEAVER.
SPECIFICATION forming pazt of Letters Patent No. 535,839, dated March 19, 1895.
Application filed May 19, 1894- Serial No. 511,756 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDRICK J. LOWNDES, of the city county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful In provements in Oleavers for Butchers Use, of which the following is a specification.
My improvement consists in a cleaver having the usual edge and provided additionally at the back with an edged tooth for severing bones. It also preferably hasa catch for engaging and detaching wires such as are used upon tags. Besides these features it may also have a damper grip for withdrawing skewers.
I will describe in detail a cleaver embodying my improvement and then point out the novel features in claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view of a cleaver embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a back view thereof. Fig. 3 is alongitudinal section of a portion of the blade; the section being taken parallel with the back. Fig. 4 is a side view of a cleaver on a smaller scale, showing it in the act of disengaging a skewer and detaching a tag.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A designates the blade of the cleaver. It is provided with a tang or shank a which is fastened to a handle B of any suitable shape. This handle may be made of wood and the tang or shank a may extend entirely through ,it and be fastened by a nut a'beyondthe extremity of the handle.
The blade of the cleaver is provided with the usual front cutting edge a At the back it is provided with an edged tooth a This may be quite narrow so that it may be used to chop or sever bones without at the same time cutting the meat adjacent thereto. At
the junction of the tooth a with the back of the blade A I have made a notch A which constitutes a catch for engaging the wire or cord employed to fasten the tag. If the blade be chamfered at the point of the junction of the tooth a it may be made to cut the wire or cord instead of merely gripping it.
The blade may be provided with the ordinary hole a for engaging with a nail on which the cleaver may be hung. It preferably has a clasp 01. for engaging a skewer. This clasp consists of a hole having a circular portion and two tangential portions which converge to an angle or point. The tangential portions will preferably be chamfered so as to present sharp edges, but the circular portion will preferably be rounded. By sliding the clasps a. over the skewer and then inclining the blade of the cleaver to the length of the skewer, the clasp will grasp the skewer so that it may withdraw the latter.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv 1. A cleaver having the usual cutting edge at the front, and provided with atooth at the back extending some distance beyond the main line of the back, the tooth' being provided with a knife like cutting edge extendiug for some distance longitudinally along the length of the cleaver, approximately parallel to the front edge of the cleaver, substantially as specified.
2. A cleaver having the usual front edge and having at the back a tooth which projects considerably beyond the main line of the back, and which is provided with a cutting edge extending for some distance longitudinally along the length of the cleaver, said cleaver having at the junction of the tooth with the back of the cleaver a catch for engaging a cord or wire, substantially as specifled.
3. As a new article of manufacture a cleaver having the usual front cutting edge and provided at the back with a tooth having a cutting edge extending for some distance longitudinallyaloug the cleaver, a clasp for engaging a skewer and a catch at the junction of the tooth with the back of the cleaver for engaging a cord or wire, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDRIOK J. LOWNDES.
