VUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM MACKERT, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA.
CHIMNEY-CAP.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 533,995, dated February 12, i895.
Application tiled March 28, 1894.
To all 'whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MACKERT, a 'citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, county of Berks, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Chimney-Caps, ofwhich the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to certain improvements in chimney caps the main object of applied roof or covering for use in connection with the cap pieces -which are directly supported upon the chimney.
The invention is fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and is specifically pointed out in the subjoined. claims. I
Figure l is a sectional elevation of a complete chimney cap embodying my improvements, the section being taken on the line ---x of Fig; 2. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same with the roof plate removed but with the corner posts in position, one of which is shown in cross-section. A portion of one of the pieces C is broken away where the extensible connection with the adjacent piece is made. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a portion ofthe roof plate with one of the corner posts indicated in dotted lines.
A represents the `top portion Vof a brick chimney which is shown formed in steps at the top as is frequently done.
B is abinding frame made up of a series of at either side of the chimney by means of bolts which pass through holes yin onesec tion or strip and engage a slot in the other, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1 which represent the lapping of two of the strips, on the opposite side of thebrick work.
C are cap'pieces `bearing upon the top of the chimney and similarly connected together in the same manner as the binding frame by means of bolts engaging the lapping portion c of kone piece and the slots c2 ment of both frame and cap to different sizes of chimneys. A depending flange con these SerialNo. 505,390. (No model.)
The cap pieces C are provided at each corner with tapering undercut projections c8 which are adapted to engage and lock the feet d3 of corner posts D so as to permit the latter to be readily connected to the cap pieces. The top of these posts is formed with bolting lugs d which are provided with slots d2 extending diagonally inward from the corner, and upon these lugs are supported the roof plateF. The latter is provided'at each corner with slots f arranged at right angles to the slots d2 in the corner posts, the object of this arrangement being to enable the same roof plate to be conveniently secured to posts locatedat dierent distances apart. By slotting the lugs d and the plate F so that the slots intersect each other as shown it is evident that the'bolt E will engage both so as to permit the convenient fastening of them together though the distances between ,the posts vary considerably in both directions. Ornamental pieces G on top of the roof plate serve -to cover the slotted openings in the l latter. Y-
The binding `trame B serves to greatly strengthen the top of the chimney and is at the same time adjustable to different sizes and forms a substantial support for the cap pieces C.
The posts D and roof plate F are by means of my construction readily and rmly attached to the cap pieces being easily adjusted to correspond with the latter and each other regardless of all irregularities which may occur.
What I claim is- 1. In a chimney cap the combination with the extensible pieces C of corner posts D removably secured thereto and having bolting lugs d at the top provided with diagonal slots d2 and a 'roof plate having corner slots arranged at rightA angles to said slots in the post lugs and adj ustably secured thereto, substantially as set forth.
2. In a chimney cap the combination with the extensible pieces C of corner posts D removably secured thereto and having bolting lugs d at the top provided with diagonal slots d2, a roof plate having corner slots arranged at right angles to said slots in the post lugs,
ornamental pieces G arranged to cover said flange c inclosing said `flange b of the bind- 1o slots and bolts engaging said slots to adjustng strips, substantially as set forth. ably secure the parts, substantially as set In testimony whereof I affix my signature forth. in presence of two witnesses. 5 3. In a chimney cap the extensibly oonnected binding strips B adapted to inolose WILLIAM MAOKERT' the top of the chimney and having avertieal` ange b, in combination with the extensibiy connected cap pieces C having a depending Witnesses:
