To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNST TROELL'ISOH, a citizen of Germany, residing at Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picture Games for Illustrating First Reckoning, (for which I have obtained a German patent, No. 74,169, dated September 17, 1898,) of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved picture-game to be used for instructing children in the rudiments of arithmetic.
My invention consists of one or more gamecards on each of which a certain numeral is represented by a group of dots of the same or of different colors, by a group of objects representing the value of the numeral which objects in the group may have the same color or position, or different colors or positions as the dots, and which card is also provided with as many spaces as there are dots or objects in the group, which spaces serve the purpose of receiving disks known as men that are arranged on said spaces in the same order as the dots or objects are arranged in their respective groups.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 represents a series of groups of dots, the value of which group ranges from one upward, each group of dots standing for a series of cards. Fig. 2 is a face View of a card on which the value of the numeral 6 is represented. Figs. 3 to 8 inclusive are face views of additional cards representing in a different manner the value of the numeral 6, and Fig. 9 represents face views of several of the disks which are employed with the game.
Similar letters and figures of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The game consists of a set of cards or fields divided into a number of series, such as f f ,f ,f ,f,f ,f which represent the value of the numeral 6 in different manners, but on the same principle. Other numerals such as 1, 2,3, &c., may be represented in a similar way by additional series of cards, and Fig. 1 is intended to indicate by each group of dots the series of cards which stands for the numeral annexed to each group. The re maining figures, however, are sui ficient to illustrate the invention.
In the card or field f the value of the numeral 6 is first represented by six dots p and by a group of six pictures or images .2 of geometrical objects, animals, plants and the like, the value of the numeral 6 being here indicated by six hearts. The card or field f contains six spaces 3 into or upon which disks or men such as a, b, b, c and 0 can be placed, on which disks are representations of objects either corresponding to those on the card or difierent therefrom. may bear representations of hearts so that the child can produce the group of six hearts shown on the card or field f by placing six corresponding disks a on the spaces 3.
The value of the numeral 6 is represented on the card or field f in a different manner. In place of six black dots this card or field has only five black dots and one red or other colored dot, and this card or field also contains a group of six figures such as .2, of which five have the same position and the sixth has a different position; or five of these figures may have the same color and the sixth a different color. The child reproduces the group of figures by placing five of the disks such as Z) on the five recesses or spaces .9 which are cross-hatched, all the figures constituting said group having the same color or position, and in the sixth space which is plain and not cross-hatched the sixth disk such as b is placed, the figure on which is given the same position or color as in the group of figures.
In the card or field f there are four black dots and two red or other colored dots, four figures ,2 having the same position and two of them being arranged differently from the four, but the two have each the same position as the other.
In the card or field f there are three black dots and three red or other colored dots, the six figures being divided into two groups of three figures each, the several figures of each group having the same position; but the figures in the respective groups being differently arranged.

the figures are arranged in two groups-one group of two and one of four,the figures in the group containing two having the same position and the figures in the group containing four having a different position thereto.
On the card or field f there are three groups of dots of two each, the two end groups each containing two black dots and the middle group two red or other colored dots, the figures z in this case being similarly arranged in three groups of two each, the figures in the end groups having the same position, and the figures in the middle group having different positions thereto; or the groups may be properly colored to correspond to the dots.
The dots, figures, the spaces and the disks for the same, permit of expressing the value of the numeral 6 in the following different ways, for example, by means of the card or fieldf as: 6-5:1;5+1:6; (i-5::?;6::1 5+1; (FE-5:1 and 1 to carry.
In the illustration shown on the card or field f the value of the numeral 6 can be eX- pressed as follows: 6-4:2; 4+:6; 4e+?:6; 6-1-4 1 and 2 to carry; 6:1 4E+2; G-Z
By means of the card or field f the value of the numeral 6 can be expressed by (S S-k8; 8-1-23 6; 68:3;1 3:3; 2 3:6; 6+3:2. By the card or fieldf 6-2:'-L; 2+4:6; 6-4: :2, the. In this manner a set of cards may be constituted which consists of several series of cards, each set representing in different manners the value of a certain numeral.
By means of my improved picture-game, figures and arithmetical calculations are illustrated for the child in such a manner that it can easily understand the same as the colored dots and representations of the objects are familiar toits degree of expression, The difference in colors or posit-ions'can be readily indicated by the child in playing, by placing disks of the same number and of corresponding value to the dots, and objects on the spaces 5, so that the child acquires a knowledge of the values of numerals and how-these values are obtained.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A game-card, in which a certain numeral is represented by dots of the same or different colors, by a group of objects representing the value of the numeral, which objects in the group may have the same color or position or different colors or positions as the dots, and by as many spaces as there are dots or objects in the group, which spaces serve for receiving disks bearing figures which are adapted to be placed on said spaces in the same order as that in which the group of objects is arranged, substantially as set forth.
2. A picture-game, consisting of a set of cards divided into several series, each series representing the values of one numeral and comprising cards each representing in a different manner from the other the value of the numeral, each card having its numeral represented by dots of the same or different colors, by a group of objects representing the value of the numeral, which objects in the group may have the same color or position or different colors or positions as the dots, and which card is also provided with as many spaces or recesses as there are dots or objects in the group, and of disks bearing suitable figures and adapted to be matched with said spaces, so that they may be placed on said spaces in the same order as the objects are arranged in the group of objects, substantially as set forth.
