TWINE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.` 531,633, dated January 1, 1895.

citizen of theUnited States, residing at Hub-' bell, in the county ot' Thayer, State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Twine-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. This invention is an improved twine holder adapted for use in stores, dac., the object `ot' the device being to take up the slack end of the cord, and raise it above the counter s that it will not become entangled. v
With this obj ectin view it consists broadly in a supporting frame, a cup or receptacle arranged therein and adapted to have a rotary and vertical movement, and a cord attached to said cup or receptacle and carrying a weight at the other end, the wrapping cord being wound around the cup in such a manner that when the end is drawn to take a piece the cup is revolved and raised, winding up the weight, so that when the piece of cord is severed and the end released the weight will descend, revolve the cup in the opposite direction and take up the slack end of cord.
Myinvention consists also in certain details of construction and combination of parts all of which will be fully described hereinafter` and pointed out in the claims.

In carrying out my invention I employ a supporting frame A, consisting of the top `piece a, having a loop a', the side members a2,
and the bottom piece a3 which latter piece is quite wide and heavy, the otherv members being preferably constructed from a single piece of good stout Wire. The loop a is for the purpose of suspension andI also arrange guide loops a4 upon the side members, through which the cord is passed as presently described.
A screw threaded shaft B extends upwardly from the center of the bottom or base piece and upon this shaft is arranged a threaded spool, or sleeve C, which supports at its upper end the twine holder or cup, D. A cord E is attached at its upper end to the upper portion of the spool, and upon the lower end of this cord isl secured a Weight F said end lpassing through a guiding eye e, attached to the bottom or base piece a3.
y The cupor holder D may be cylindrical or hemi-sphericalin shape, and within the same, at one side, is arranged a tension device consisting of a rod G secured to the side at its end, al tube G mounted to slide thereon, a spring G2 for holding said tube in place and a stop G3 for limiting the movement of,y said tube.

In setting up my improved device the ball is placed within the holder,the end of the cord passed through the tension device and then through a small hold I in the side of the cup. The cup is then revolved and with it of course the spool or sleeve. This operation winds up the weight and at the same time moves the spool and cup vertically upward. This vertical movement causes the cord carrying the weight to wind evenly upon the spool and thus prevents binding. The Iend of the cord H is then passed through one of the loops a4 and as much of the cord unwound from the ball as desired. The end is then released and the weight immediately begins to descend. In so doing the spool and cup are revolved in the opposite direction to which they were pre1 viously revolved and the slack end of the cord is wound about the outside of the cup. During this winding operation the cup isv gradually moving downward so that the string is gradually wound upward thereon and all binding is thereby prevented.
The tension device yields to the cord When the spool has reached its limit and thus prevents the cord from breaking. yTo limit the Aupward movement of the spool and cup and thus prevent them from being turned off the screw threaded shaft, I arrange a stop K upon the cord E said stop being located to strike the guide eye c just before the spool reaches the top of the screw threaded shaft.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure' by Letters Patent, is
l. In a twine holder the combination with a frame, of a rigid screw threaded shaft supported thereby, a cup or holder` having a threaded spool or sleeve, adapted to turn upon said shaft, and a cord attached to said spool and carrying a weight at its end, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a twine holder the combination with a frame carrying a rigid vertical threaded shaft, of a cup carrying a threaded spool, the cord attached to the spool, and the weight carried by the cord, substantially as shown and described.
3. In atwineholder, the combination with a frame, of the screw threaded shaft carried thereby the threaded spool or sleeve, the cup or holder mounted thereon, the cord carrying a weight and stop, the guide eye, and the guide loops arranged. upon the frame, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a twine holder a tension device comprising a horizontal rod, a vertical tube movable thereon, a springr located on the rod and bearing upon the tube and a stop also located ou the rod, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a twine holder the combination with a frame, comprising the top, side and base portions, the top and side members having loops, of a threaded shaft carried by the base', a
threaded spool arranged thereon, a cup or holder supported upon said spool, the cord E attached to said spool, the weight carried by said cord the stop also on said cord and the guide eye upon the base, substantially as shown and described.
G. In a twine holder, the combination with a supporting frame, of a twine holder or cup arranged therein, and a screw threaded shaf t upon which said cup is mounted whereby as the cup revolves it moves vertically, substantially as shown and described.
7. In a twine holder, the combination with the supporting frame, of the vertical screw shaft, the threaded spool mounted thereon, 45 the twine holder or cup, and the cord attached to the spool and carrying a weight at its end, substantially as shown and described.
8. In a twine holder, the combination with a suitable support, of a threaded shaft rigid 5o thereon, and a cup, mounted to turn upon said shaft and a weight connected with said cup by means of a cord, substantially as shown and described.
