SAME PLACE.
' ELEVATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming'part of Letters Patent No. 531,625, dated January 1, 1895. 4 Application filed January 20, 1394. Serial No. 497,470. (N0 model.) I
To aZZ whom it may concern! 1 Be it known that I, LOU ROTHAN DENNIS, of Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and novel improvement in elevators, and is more especially adapted to be used in connection with that class known as freight elevators.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows a side elevation with parts broken away of an elevator provided with the improvement, while Fig. 2 shows a top view thereof, with the flooring removed and parts broken away.
A, A, represent two toothed racks of suitable size and material, and are slightly round upon the toothed surface so as to accommo-' date the worms,-2, 2. These worms are preferably journaled below the car, B, y to the housings, 4:, 4, and brackets, 3. They are mounted upon the shafts, 5, which, in addition, are provided with the gear wheels, 6. These gear wheels are adapted to mesh with the main driving gear, D, which is supported by means of the hangers, E. This main driving gear is in the form of a compound gear, andabove is provided with the crown gear,'7. Mounted below the car, at a suitable-point, is a stub shaft, 9, provided with a belt pulley, 10, and the pinion, 12, adapted to mesh with the crown gear, 7. Within the car is positioned a motorflI-I, which'may be electric, water or any suitable mechanical motive, in belt connection, 13, with the pulley, 10. Now, as long as the motor, H, is at rest the car is at rest, as it is impossible for the car to move as theworms securely hold within the racks, A, A.
Now, in order to carry the car upward it is simply necessary to start the motor in the proper direction so as to revolve the worms,
2, 2, which, by means of proper gear connections, feed upward, and as these worms are carried upward within the racks, 2, 2, of course carry the car with them. In going downward the operation is the same with the ex ception, of course, that the worms are made to revolve in the opposite direction.
The device isnoticeable because of its extreme simplicity, and
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters'Patent, is
The combination, in an elevator, of'the racks, A, A, the car, B, provided with the worms, 2, 2, meshing with said racks, and supported upon the shafts, 5, and provided with the gears, 6, 6, the main gear, D, meshing with said gears, 6, 6, the crown gear, 7, anda main driving spur, 12, all arranged and adapted to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LOU ROTHAN. DENNIS.
