W. T. MERSEREAU. v SUPPORT FOR CANOPY 3011s IN METALLIC CRIBS 0R BEDSTEADS.
Patented Dec. 18, 1894.

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIo WILLIAM T. MERSEREAU, OF SOUTH ORA NGE, NEW JERSEY.
SUPPORT FOR CANOPY-RODS IN METALLIC CRIBS ORBEDSTEADS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 530,953, dated December 18 1894.
Application filed October 2, 1893.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LWILLIAM T. MERSEREAU, a citizen of theUnited States, residing atSouth Orange, Essex county, New Jersey, have inmetallic bedstead, and the construction will be imderstood by reference to the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bedstead provided with these improvements. Fig. 2 is a side view of the canopy rod detached. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the socket for the canopy rod with the adjacent bed-rail; and Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the same on line w, w, in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a section, like Fig. 4, upon a larger scale, with the screw plug in the top of the socket.
The invention is applicable alike to metallic cribs or bedsteads, as the size of the frame to which it is applied is wholly immaterial.
a designates a canopy rod of the usual construction, which is shown fixed adjustably upon the head piece I) of the bedstead. In the present invention I construct such head piece with a vertical tubular socket 0 adapted to conceal the lower end of the rod a and to permit its vertical adjustment by the use of suitable fastenings.
The socket is formed at the middle of the head piece intermediate to the post, by connecting a metallic tube with the various parts of the head piece in an ornamental manner.
The head piece is shown with horizontal rails f, f, and curved bars g, all of which are fitted to the socket tube a in a suitable manner. The socket tube is shown extended through the top rail f, and may be threaded internally at the upper end, as shown in Fig. 5, so as to receive a screw plug having an Serial No. 486,952. (No model.)
ornamental head e which serves to close the socket and to conceal its purpose, when not in use.
A threaded hole his shown in the side of the socket .near the top, and the plug dis formed with'a set screw d upon its point, which is adapted to fit in such hole, to clamp the canopy rod at any desired height, as shownin Figs. 1 and 4.
The plug may be constructed without thread if desired, as shown in Fig. 4, and is thus rendered smoother upon its exterior whenin use as a set screw.
The plug is readily retained in placeby its position upon the top of the socket when fitted therein, without any thread, as shown in Fig. 3.
Two of the sockets 0 may be applied to the same head piece if desired, or if one be used it may beplaced at any other point than the center; although a single one is naturally placed in the center, as shown in Fig. 1.,
By combining the plug and set screw, the same piece is enabled to perform a double function, and operates to impart an ornamental appearance to the socket (as shown..-
in Fig. 3) at any season when the canopy rod is not required.
' Having thus set forth my invention, whatI claim is- In a metallic bedstead, the, combination, with the frame of'the head or foot piece, of a vertical socket intermediate to the posts to receive a canopy rod, the upper end of the socket being threaded internally and provided in the side with the set screw hole h.
and the threaded plug 6 fitted to the top of the socket, and provided with a set screw to fit the hole and clamp the canopy rod when desired, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM T. MERSEREAU. Witnesses:
THOMAS S. CRANE, HENRY J.'MILLER.
