UN llTE STATES PATENT rrrcn.
.JUDSON T.- MUNDY, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
PENClL-SHARPENER AND POINT-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION ,forming part of Letters Patent No. 530,789, dated December 11, 1894.
Application fil d April '25, 1894. Serial No. 509,040. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J nnson T. MUNDY', a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex, inthe State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and vuseful Improvement in Pencil-Sharpeners and Point-Protectors,of which the following is a specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in pencil sharpeners and point protectors, and has particular reference to that class of such devices, in which the sharpener is adapted to be placed on the pencil, the pencil sharpened until the point projects beyond the end of the sharpener, the sharpener to remain on the pencil while writing, and when the pencil is put into the pocket, the sharpener is pushed forward far enough so that the tip of the pencil will be covered, and thus prevent its breaklng.
The object of my invention is to provide such a device as will be simple in operation, durable in construction, neat in appearance, and which will not present any points or uneven surfaces which would be liable to catch in the clothing of the person in whose pocket the pencil rests.
To these ends, my invention consists in the improved construction and combination of parts, as more particularly described and pointed out in the-claims.
In the drawingsz-Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, showing it attached to a pencil. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the same, taken through the lead shaving knife, looking downward. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of the same, taken through the wood-cuttin g knife, looking upward; and Fig. 5 is a detail of the wood cutting knife.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the point protector of my device, which is composed of a short cylindrical portion, attached to and forming a part of the main portion 2 of the sharpener. This cylindrical portion has an opening 3, of the same size as the lead of the pencil is, when it is ready to be used. The advantage of this construction will hereinafter appear.
The main portion 2,011 the sharpener, is
made cone-shaped, and is adapted to contain the wood-cutting and lead shaving knives, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. At the base of the cone-shaped portion is an enlarged band portion 4:,integral with said main portion2, for the purpose of forming a means for the easy turning of the device when sharpening a pencil. This band portion has its outer edge roughened to afford a better grip for the tingers. Attached to and forming a part of the band portion is a clamping portion 5, consisting of a cylindrical portion 6, having two or more fingers projecting downward, each of said fingers being adapted to clamp against the pencil and hold it in position in the sharpener.
7 designates the wood cutting knife, which is secured in the main portion 2, at a slight angle from the center. This Wood cutting knife is of curved shape, as shown in Fig. 5, and is adapted to shave the wooden portion of the pencil, so that the lead portion alone remains, the shavings of the wood passing out through the opening 8, as shown in Fig.
.4. This knife, owing to its curved form, will cut'the pencil evenly and cut a clean straight shaving.
'9 designates the lead-shaving blade, which is adapted to be secured-to the main portion near the apex of the cone, and consists of the ordinary knife used in pencil sharpeners. The purpose of this knife is to cut or shave the lead to asmaller size, the part shaved oif passing out through the opening 10.
The main portion of the sharpener, has an opening 11, passing through its center, from the top .end of the knife 7 to the lower end of the knife 9, of slightly larger diameter than the opening 3, its size being such as to allow of the lead passing easily therethrough, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
It is obvious that, owing to the fact that the two knives are located some distance apart, the part 12 of the main portion 2, will form a support for the lead, which will serve to keep the same from being easily broken, and the point protector 1, will serve to keep the lead from breaking after it passes the lead shaving knife 9.
The operation of the device is'obvious from the above description taken in connection with the drawings, and it is therefore not 7 deemed necessary to further describe the operation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. A pencil sharpener and point protector, comprising in its construction, a cone-shaped main portion, having secured integrally therewith a point protector having an opening extending therethrough; a lead-shaving knife secured to said main portion near its top, the edge of said knife being adapted to shave the lead at a slight angle; an opening extending through said main portion, of slightly larger diameter than that in the point protector; a curved wood-cutting knife secured to said main portion at its base, the edge of which extends in a gradual curve, from the inner side of said main portion at its base, to the edge of said opening in the main portion; an enlarged band integrally formed with said main portion; and a clamping portion adapted to clasp a lead pencil, substantially as described.
2. In a pencil sharpener and point protector, the combination of the point protector 1, having opening 3; the conical main portion 2 secured to said point protector; lead-shaving knife 9 secured in said main portion near its top; wood'cutting knife 7 secured in said main portion near its base; the opening 11, passing through said main portion from the top of said Wood cutting knife 7 to said leadshaving knife 9, said opening being of slightly larger diameter than the opening 3; the enlarged band portion 4, formed integrally with said main portion; and the clamping portion 5, consisting of the cylindrical portion 6, and the fingers extending downwardly therefrom, the whole being adapted to embrace a leadpencil, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of April, 1894.
JUDSON T. MUNDY.
