TRAUGOTT OPEL, OF IIALLE-ON-THE-SAALE, GERMANY.
FOLDIN G BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 529,944, dated November 27, 1894.
Application filed May 13, 1892- Serial No. 432,918. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, TRAUGOTT OPEL, manu facturer, of Halle-on-the-Saale, in the Kingdom of Prussia and German Empire, have invented a newand useful Improvement in Folding Beds, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in wardrobe bedsteads, and has for its object to provide an article of the class mentioned having combined with the casing and bedstead a spring for assisting in raising and lowering the bedstead into and out of the wardrobe casing, and means for regulating the tension of said spring.
To such end my invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter decribed and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is an elevation of awardrobe bedstead constructed according to my invention, the right-hand side being in vertical section. Fig. 2 is a side view, the bedstead being lowered into its position for use, and the coiled shown in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of a table attachment showing its connection with the main structure. Fig. 4 is a perspective view illustrating a slightly different arrangement of thewardrobe casing, and Fig. 5 is a side view of the coiled spring and regu lating mechanism. I
In the said drawings the reference letter A designates the wardrobe-casing near the interior lower end of which the bedstead is journaled to swing on an axis or trunnions B as shown in Fig. 1, so that its outer end may be swung up into the wardrobe-casing A when not in use and swung out thereof when it is In one side of the wardrobe-casing is secured a bracket A interiorly screw threaded, through which works a screw-threaded spindle A provided at its upper end with a hand of the axis extends to the outside of the ward robe-casing A, and secured at one end thereto is a coiled spring F, the other and free end of which rests, and is adapted to slide in a seat A provided therefor at the lower end of the screw threaded spindle A This coiled spring F, assists materially in raising and lowering the bedstead B into and out of the wardrobe-casing and by turning the handwheel m in the proper direction the tension of the coiled spring F, is regulated.
Near the foot-board of the bedstead, secured to the mattress support, is a garment hook B of which there may be any desired number upon which the clothing maybe supported when the bedstead is swung up within the wardrobe casing.
At each side of the bedstead-receiving recess of the wardrobe-casing A, are arranged a series of storing-shelves 0, upon which clothing and other articles may be placed, hinged doors D, D, closing and permitting access to said shelves, as shown in Fig. 2. The door D, as shown, in Fig. 1, opens downward and is adapted to support a wash-basin.
At one side of the wardrobe-casing A, as shown in Figs. 1, 3v and 5, is formed a recess or slide 11', in which is fitted to slide in and out one section of a small table I), the sections of which are hinged together so that they may be folded up, as in Fig. 2, and slide within the wardrobe-casing, and which may be 'withdrawn and opened out asin Fig. 3. The table h is supported in its opened position by an arm (I, connected by a link (1', to a sliding rod e which is provided with an inner, bent end 6 moving in a slotfformed in a plate f, l0- cated within the Wardrobe-casing A. The outward movement of the rod 6 and connected supporting arm at, is limited by the bent end 6 of the rod e coming in contact with the end wall of the slot f.
Carried by one leaf of the table it is a pedestal awhich is adapted to support alamp or candle (not shown) which will be provided with suitable means to engage said pedestal.
In Fig. 4, I have illustrated a different arrangement of wardrobe-casing, which, except in the points specified, is the same as shown in the other figures of the drawings. In this modified construction the front wall Oand one side wall M, are formed in one piece, or two pieces rigidly connected together, and are hinged to the back wall K by any suitable hinges as K. Upon the interior of this front and side wall is arranged a supporting frame L, upon which clothing and other articles may ICO thereto at one end, and a vertically movable spindle having a seat provided at its lower x 5 end in which rests the free end of the spring, and a hand wheel on said spindle for regulating the tension of said spring, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my 20 hand in presence of two witnesses.
TRAUGOT'I OPEL.
