"UMTED STATES PATENT, IOFEIOE.
ci-IAELES w. SHIPPEE, or MILEOED, MASSACHUSETTS.
WATERPROOF BOOT OR SHOE AND METHO'D'OF MAKING SAME.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 529,880, dated November 27, 1894.
Application tiled June 2,1894. Serial No. 513,281. (No model.)
' sachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Waterproof Boots or Shoes and Methods of Making Same, of which the following description, in connection. with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts- Difficulty is experienced in the use of ordinary india rubber or waterproof boots and shoes wherein the upper and its sole are integral or in one piece, by the rapidrwearing out of the sole when subjected to but com` paratively little hard usage, and attempts have been made to strengthen india rubber boots and shoes by the addition thereto of an outer sole composed of leather.
In accordance with my invention, I have aimed to produce an india rubber upper and outer sole integral therewith in such manner that it may be readily incorporated witha leather outer sole and a tap sole, and this may be done without subjecting the latter to vulcanizing heat during the operation of making the shoe.
Figure l, in section, represents the dier ent pieces of which my improved shoe iscomposed, the same being slightly separated; and Fig. 2 shows the same assembled in accordance with my invention.
Referring to the drawings, the upper a has integral with it a sole b and the interior of the shoe has an inner sole c.
The parts so far described are and may be common to any usual india rubber boot or shoe. i
In the drawings, d represents a fillingy or intermediate sole which `may be of leather or of any other desired material, and e, a leather outer sole. I provide means for uniting the ordinary india'rubber boot or shoe with these soles, and to do this I apply to the upper a stay strip f, composed of cloth coated with rubber, of rubber alone, or any material which will vulcanize to the rubber upper, and I stick or apply the same to the india rubber of the uppers when in their green state, and
I then apply in the Space between the bottom of the usual sole b of the rubber shoe and the side of the filling or intermediate sole, a layer g of similarvulcanizable fabric, and for the best results saidla/yer will extend entirely through between the soles b and d.
By the usual vulcanizing processes, I unite the staystrip f and the layer g together, portions of the stay strip and layer, one orboth, preferably both, being extended sufficiently to constitute awrap or bindingwhich isfitted about the outer edges of the filling o r intermediate sole d, which is lasted in the usual manner in making leather boots or shoes, as represented in Fig. 2, and then the outersole e is applied and the outer sole and the filling or intermediate sole are united by nails, screws, pegs, or fastenings commonly employed to unite soles in the manufacture of leather boots and shoes.
It will be seen that the flaps, as I may denominate the stay strip, and the edge of the layer g, constitute a sort of binding stay` which is firmly secured between the two soles d and e, and in assembling the parts after the vportions ca -b, f-g, have been united byvulcanization, it is preferable to apply to the filling or intermediate sole suitable liquid india rubber cement to further aid in uniting the Same together.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A Waterproof boot or shoe composed of an india rubber upper and integral sole, and having one edge of a stay strip vulcanized thereto, a filling or intermediate sole, and an outer sole of leather, the said stay strip being bent about the edges of the filling or intermediate sole and placed between said sole and the Outer sole, the outer sole and the lling or intermediate sole being united by fastenings extended thereinto, substantially as described.
2. A waterproof boot or shoe composed es sentially of an india rubber uppei having a sole integral therewith, a layer lof vulcanizable fabric vulcanized to the said rubber sole and extended outwardly for some distance beyond the edges thereof, a filling or intermediate sole, and an outer sole ef leather), In testimeny `whereof l have signed my the edges of the layer of fabric being folded name to this specification in the presence of about the edges of the filling or intermediate two subscribing Witnesses.
sole and between the said sole and the outer CHARLES XN. SHIPPEE. 5 sole, and fastenings extended into and unit- Witnesses:
ing the llng or intermediate sole and the GEO. W. GREGORY,
outer sole, substantially as described. JOHN C. EDWARDS.
