TRACK-LAYING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 529,880, dated November 27, 1894. Application filed July 2,1894. Serial No. 516,281. (No model.) Patented in Canada July 16, 1894, No. 46,593.

Be it known that I, THOMAS WILSON PAT- ERSON, a subject of the Queen of England, residing at Victoria, Province of British Columbia, Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and useful Track-Laying Machine, (for which I have obtained a patent, No. 46,593, dated July 16, 1894., in the Dominion of Canada,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in track laying machines, in which sprocket wheels, and Ewart chains, are operated from the axle of an ordinary car, for laying railway ties, in conjunction with a center car,
running on rails placed on top of flat cars, for bringing forward the ties from the rear cars, and depositing them on the two side cars; secondly, in depositing the rails, on each side on top of ties, ready for spiking, by means of a traveler, running on acurved overhead track.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1, is aside elevation of the machine. Fig. 2, is a plan of the machine. Fig. 3, is a side View of one of the side cars. Fig. 4, is an end view of one of the side cars. Fig. 5, is a side view of the center car. Fig. 6, is a plan of the center car. Fig. '7, is an end view of the traveler and overhead track. Fig. 8, is a side View of the traveler and overhead track. Fig. 9, is the tongs for grasping the rails. Fig. 10, is the rollers and brackets to go in stake pockets.

a is an ordinary flat car, on the axle of which a sprocket wheel 17, in halves, is clamped.
O is a Ewart chain, running sprocket wheel d; and through shaft e, giving motion to two sprocket wheels f, f, by means of which the Ewart chains g, g, running on wood beds h, h; and returning under sheaves i, i; carry the ties along, and drops them over on to the bed of the track, as the car moves ahead on the rails already laid down; the speed of the carrying chains 9, g, being so proportioned as to move at the same rate as the car.
j is the center car, for bringing the ties from the cars in rear, on which the ties are raised up a sufficient height for the car j, to run under, when the wrought iron frame 7c, is let down. 1

The car is run under the ties with the frame 70, let down. The frame is then lifted, by the mechanism described, and takes a load of ties.

s, s, s, s, are rails laid on top of flat cars, for the tie cars to run on.

The rails to be laid are brought along from the rear cars onthe rollers u, u, to front, and are then grasped by the tongs c; and carried by the traveler w, on an overhead track 00, made circular at end, so as to swing around the rails, and deposit them on each side on top of ties, ready for spiking.

I make no claim to the rollers u, or tongs v, for I am aware that these are not new; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination in a track laying machine of the sprocket wheel 6; Ewart chain 0; wheels d, f, f; chains g, g; beds h, h; cars j, R, R; for laying the ties all substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with the rollers u, u; tongs o; brackets t; of the traveler w; track on; for laying the rails, substantially as described.
