B. SEARS. CHECK ATTACHMENT.
No. 526,204. Patented Sept. 18, 1894.
W/TNESSE INVENTOI? 1/ @g' w ZM" UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT SEARS, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
CHECK ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 526,204, dated September 18, 18194. Application filed June 28,189 i. Serial No. 515,970. (No model.)
. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT SEARS, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Check Attachments, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. I
.The object of the invention is to provide an improved attachment for bridles, adapted for use in connection with an overdraw check for the purpose of holding the horses head in such a position as will prevent choking and otherwise keep the animal under control.
The invention consists in the novel construction hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved devices applied; and Fig. 2 is a perspective View on an enlarged scale showing the improved check devices and bit.
The bit, cheek pieces and chin strap arranged as shown in the drawings are those forming the subject matter of Letters Patent No. 514,779, granted to me on February 13,
1894, and will herein be referred to only in general terms.
In the present improvements there is provided a frame Awhich is in bowed or U -form, the side arms at extending rearwardly from the front bowed portion b, and spaced apart sufficiently to range along the sides of the animals nose.
To the rear ends of the arms a the ends of a nose band B are suitably secured, such nose band being in practice at a point in the rear of the bit mouth bar 0, and to the side bars at a point between the rear ends and the front bowed end the chin strap D is secured and is adapted to extend beneath the lower jaw of the animal. The chin strap as shown has free guided movement in the cheek pieces E,
of the bit and its connection with the frame usually is effected by rings G, having hooks 9 that engaged orifices in said frame.
Thev frame A near its bowed front end is formed with slots 0, one in each arm a, or an equivalent formation, to enable proper connection with the ends of the overdraw check F, which passes through the head-stall in the usual manner.
The frame A is of metal and its bowed form gives it the necessary strength, and further makes the action of the check uniform on both sides of the animals head.
In practice, with the connection of the check strap, nose strap and chin strap as shown,
any lowering movement of the animals head will result in an effective and equal pressive action on the nose and chin straps, while avoiding all bruising or pinching.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The herein described check devices, comprising a bowed frame having arms extending rearwardly from the bowed front end, a nose band having its lower ends connected with the rear upperends of the frame, and a chin strap having its ends connected with the frame at a point in advance of the nose band, the frame being adapted at its front end to receive an overdraw check, substantially as described.
2. The combination with abit and its cheek pieces, of a bowed frame thereabove, a depending chin strap connected with the cheek pieces and with the said frame between the ends thereof, and an upwardly extending nose strap connected at its lower ends to the rear ends of the frame, the forward end of the frame being adapted for connection with the overdraw, substantially as described.
ROBERT SEARS.
