Description

J. FOWLER.
Plow.
No.I 52,407. l Pgtente Feb. 6, 1866.`
N PETERS, PHDT-IJTMDGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
JOSEPH FOWLER, OF RAHWAY, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 52,407, dated February 6, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH FoWLER,.of Rahway, in the county ot' Union and State of New Jersey, have invented and made a certain new and useful Improvement in Flows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specication, wherelll- Figure l is a side View of said plow, and Fig. 2 is a sectional plan at the line x a".
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
Plows have heretofore been made in which the mold-board could be raised or lowered for turning a furrow-slice ot' variable thickness, while the snbsoil-blade continues to act ata given depth.
My invention relates to this character of a plow; and it consists in a vertical plate extending from the subsoil-blade to the plowbeam, and in which are holes receiving bolts that attach an adjustable share that can bc raised or lowered according to the depth of furrow required.
By employing the vertical plate there is a fiat side presented, in plowing, to the landside, which causes the plow to be much lighter draft than would be the case if' the said moldboard were supported by separate bars.
In the drawings, u is the plow-beam, and l) b the handles. c is a Avertical plate, the front edge of which is beveled like a colter, and inclined, said plate being attached to the beam a at the upper end, and provided with a subsoil plow or blade, d, at its lower end having a shoe or landside, e. The blade cl is made separately, and may be of steel, so as to be replaced in case of wear.
f is the movable mold-board, made of the proper shape for turning the -furrow, and said mold-board is supported by angle-pieces or back-braces l 1, and these are attached by means of screws 2 2 that pass through the plate c into these braces l 1. There are two or'niore ranges of holes in this plate c, so that the mold-board f may be placed close to the blade d, to act as an ordinary plow, or at any desired height above for sub-soiling.
What I'claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
rIhe plate c, extending from the beam to the blade d, in combination with the movable or adjustable mold-board f, attached to said plate c at any desired height, as andl for the purposes set forth.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this 16th day of November, A. D. 1865.
JOSEPH FOWLER.
