0; D. HOAGLAND. COMBINATION BRUSH AND 00 B.
No. 524,023. Patented Aug. 7,1894.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CORNELIUS D. HOAGLAND, on BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
COMBINATION BRUSH AND COMB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 524,023, dated August '7, 1894. Application filed February 2, 1894. Serial No. 498,940- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS D. HOAG- LAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Combination Hair-Brush and Comb, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combination brush and comb, in which the comb is inserted in a groove or mortise in the side ofthe back of the brush in such a manner that the comb stands at right angles with the back of the brush and the objects of my invention are: First: To provide a combination brush and comb in which both operate on the hair at the same time; a comb that may be at will removed from the brush and each operated sepa: rately. Second: To provide a a combination brush and comb with which the hair can be easily parted without detaching the brush. Third: To provide an improved combination brush and comb with Which the hair is more thoroughly combed on account of the comb projecting below the bristles of the brush. I attain these objects by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a cross section of the device. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the same.
Similarletters refer to similar parts throughout both views.
a. is the back of the brush having a mortise or groove g of the same shape as the top of comb d, in which comb d fits. Back a has also two shoulders e and o to hold comb d firmly in position. Comb. d is some two or three inches longer than the brush so that when inserted in the brush it will project as is shown in Fig. 2. The teeth of comb 01, when in position, preferably extends below bI'lS- tles f.
The shape of the top of comb d as shown in the drawings is the shape I prefer to use and to cover in these Letters Patent, but I do not wish to limit myself to the use of this shape only, if I find others more convenient. Neither do I wish tolimit myself to any particular shape brush, but
What I claim as new is 1. In a combination hair brush and comb the combination of a brush having a mortise or groove in the lower surface of the back of the brush with a comb having a back which corresponds and fitsthe said groove or mortise so that the comb can be removed from, and replaced in the brush at will, substantially as shown and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination brush and comb, comprising a brush and a comb secured to the back of the brush with its teeth projecting substantially at right angles to the back in the same general direction as the bristles, the end of the comb being projected a considerable distan'ce beyond the end of the brush when the comb and the brush are in assembled adjustment, substantially as set forth.
CORNELIUS D. HOAGLAND.
