Description

M. DALLAS. CAN OPENER.
v (No Model.)
. No. 521,643. Patented June 19, 1894.
' complete.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MADISON DALLAS, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
CAN-OPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521,643, dated June 19, 1894.
- Application filed October 31, 1893. Serial No. 489,649. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MADISON DALLAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in theparish of Orleans and State of- Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gan-Openers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of canopeners which are designed for the purpose of cutting circular openings in the heads of cans, such as are used for containing condensed milk, fruit or edibles of Various kinds; and it consists of a circular cover, either flat or dome-shaped, as may be preferred, an annular ring of less diameter than the cover secured to' the under surface of same, a downwardly projecting cutting-blade connected with the aforesaid ring, and a handle with pin projecting downwardly through the cover, as hereinafter more fully described.
My invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective View of the device Fig. 2 represents the handle with its downward projection, and Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section of the device applied as a cover, over an opening formed in the top of a can and near the edge thereof.
In the drawings, the letter A designates the cover, or body of my device, B a ring which is soldered, or otherwise secured to the under side of same, and O a cutting blade, connected with the aforesaid ring in any desired manner.
D, designates the handle, which is preferably made of stout wire bent into oblong form with a downwardly-projecting pointed end,
- as shown at e. This end is made to penetrate the cover and thus form a pivotal point to the device 5 the lower horizontal portion (f) of the handle being soldered or otherwise secured to the upper surface of the cover, or within a groove formed therein, as shown at h, in Figs. ,7
1 and 3.
The diameter of the device is slightly less than that of the top of an ordinary one pound can, so that it may be used for removing nearly the entire top of sucha can, or for cutting a similar sized opening in larger cans.
In the operation of my invention it is only necessary to pierce the top of the can to be opened, and to press the device downward until its cutting blade shall have entered into the material of which the aforesaid top of can is composed, the device is then given one full turn in the direction of the cutting edge of the blade, thereby separating from the cantop, a certain section thereof; the detached section is then removed by means of the pivotal portion of the device, and the opening closed by applying said device, as shown at Fig. 3.
I do not desire to limit myself to the exact form, or proportion of the device herein described, but I What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein described can-opener, consisting of a cover the under surface of which is provided with an annular ring having a cutting-blade connected with the outer side thereof, a handle secured to the top of the cover, and a pin projecting downwardlyfrom said handle and through the top of the cover, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
MADISON DALLAS.
