Description
(No Model.)
B. WEBSTER. DAMPER Patented Jl lne 19, 1894.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD vWEBSTER, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
DAMPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521,531, dated June 19, 1894.
Application filed March 15, I894- Serial No. 503,799. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD WEBs'rER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Dampers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, whereby any one skilled in the art can make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and positively operating combination damper mounted on a spindle and adapted to not only control the passage of air, gas or heated products of combustion through a pipe,
but also to open the pipe to the inflow of air ata point beyond the damper so as to prevent any draft through the fire pot of the stove or furnace when the damper is closed.
To this end my invention consists in the details of the several parts making up the combination damper and their combination with the pipe having an air hole, as more particularly hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a detail View in vertical central section of a pipe showing my improved damper in a closed position. Fig. 2 is a detail view in vertical section of the pipe showing the damperopened. Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the device on a plane in cross section of the pipe. Fig. 4: is a detail rear view of the damper opened.
In the accompanying drawings the letter a denotes a pipe appurtenant to a stove, furnace or like heating or cooking apparatus in which a fire is maintained and which includes as part of the apparatus a fire pot in which coal or other combustible matter is consumed. In this pipe CtiS arranged a damper I) having a spindle c with a handle 0 located outside of thepipe in convenient position to enable the damper to be opened or closed." This pipe and damper may be, as to these features above described, of ordinary construction, and such a damper in carrying out my improvement I provide with a supplemental damper 01 mounted on a rigid arm 6 projecting from the damper b or its spindle c. This supplemental damper d is arranged on the side of the damper above or beyond the latter and on what may be called the smoke flue side that is, between the damper and outlet to chimney and as distinguished from that section of the pipe between the damper and inlet from a stove or like part, the outlet being on the upper side of the damper b as illustrated in the drawings. Through the side wall of the pipe and beyond the damper an opening f is formed and the supplemental damper d is of size and shape adapting it to fit closely against and to cover and close this opening on the inside of the pipe. The object of the opening f is to provide for an inflow of air through the wall of the pipe to prevent any draft through the fire pot of the stove or furnace when the damper b is closed.
In dampers as usually constructed the parts are not fitted air tight and there is always a chance under a strong draft from a chimney or flue for a greater or less draft to be created through the fire pot even when the damper is closed. By providing the opening f through the Wall of the pipe and beyond the damper any draft through the fire pot is prevented.
I am aware that it is notnew to provide a combination of dampers that are connected in such manner as to operate by the turning of a single handle to open a check-draft f when the main damper is closed or the reverse and do not broadly claim such an apparatus.
The main feature of improvement in my cutting it through the walls of the pipe.
I claim as my invention In combination with the pipe of a stove,
furnace or like apparatus having a check opening through the wall beyond the damper, a damper pivoted within the pipe and carrying a supplemental damper d ona rigid projection from the main damper and adapted to close the opening through the wall of the pipe and means for turning the damper, all substantially as described.
EDWARD WEBSTER. Witnesses:
