A. F. CONANT.
SOFA BED.
No. 520,635. Patented May 29, 1894.

Witnesses:
ALBERT FORBES CONANT, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
SOFA-BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 520,635, dated May 29, 1894.
Application filed August 24, 1 893.
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT FORBES Co- NANT, of Boston,in'the county of Sufiolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sofa-Beds, which will, in connection with the accompanying drawings, be hereinafter fully described, and specifically defined in the appended claims.
In said drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved bed as arranged for use as a sofa. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section through Fig. 1, and showing the bed as drawn to the front as when being used as a bed. Fig. 3 is a detached sectional plan view showing details that will be hereinafter referred to and explained.
The object of my invention is to provide a bed which can be made up and arranged in the morning in readiness to be slept on at night, but which can be utilized during the day as a sofa, without in any way disarranging the make-up of the bed, as already prepared for use as a bed; and it consists in a bed arranged to be moved in and out of a cabinet in fixed ways; and which when moved outward, or to the front, is in position for use as a bed, and which when moved inward, in part into the cabinet, is then a sofa in all respects; a hinged back and cushions being arranged to supplement the bed when it is being used as a sofa; and behind said hinged back as also beneath the bed, in said cabinet, are arranged lockers for storage of various articles, when not in use; all as will benext herein described and then pointed out in the support the spiral springs 9 upon which the mattress it rests; and over said mattress are arranged the usual bed clothes, which during the day are tucked in and are covered by the Serial No. 483,918. (No model.)
covering 8, corresponding to the other parts of upholstery; and which at its rear edge is provided with cord 7, to be utilized as will be explained. The cabinet is shown at B and is composed of back j, ends 70 and bottom 2. And in connection with said bottom is arranged a locker or case formed with the front m and top 01 provided with hinges 10 as shown. Above cover n is arranged the shelfq and above the latter is the shelf 8 to which is hinged the frame 4; to the bottom edge of which is hinged at 2 the board 2 on which is the upholstery y. Said parts '0, z and y constitute the cushion, which is marked D. Below shelf g is a narrow ledge 3 in the upper part of which is cut a space for part 4., secured to frame '0 to hold the same when it is partly raised in order to draw outward or to push inward the bed A. When said back cushion is raised, its position is as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, and when pressed down upon cushion h it is just in front of cord 7, so that it holds cover 8 of bed A perfectly in place as if the same were permanently secured upon the bed. By arranging shelf 15 above s a convenient bookcase may be provided without loss or waste of room.
The guides of bed A when being drawn out or pushed inward are shown in Fig. 3, and are marked 5 and 6; the latter being secured to the end of the locker in cabinet B, while 5 is secured to the diagonal stays e and travels with the bed as the same is brought to the front or moved to the rear.
It will be apparent upon a careful inspection of the drawings, that bed A when drawn to the front and cover 8 is removed, is in all respects available as a sleeping bed, while the several lockers in cabinet B, are available for use as such; and that when the bed is arranged (made up) and cover 8 is placed upon it, it may then be adjusted beneath cushions which serve as its back, and is then in all respects a sofa, the rising and falling motions of said cushions on the hinges a: allowing the bed to move freely in and out beneath the cushions, while by swinging the cushions forward upon hinges 2, access is had to the locker which said cushions cover.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination with cabinetB and bed Aarranged to be moved sidewise in and out of said cabinet of upholsteryy mounted on board 2 hinged to frame 1) which is pivoted at 00 to said cabinet substantially as specified.
2. The combination of cabinet B, and bed A arranged to be moved sidewise in and out of said cabinet, the cushion D, hinged to said cabinet and arranged to rest on the bed when it is in the cabinet, the covering 8, and cord 7 secured to the edge thereof to he held by the frame of said cushion, substantially as specified.
3. The combination with cabinet B and bed A arranged to be moved sidewise in and out of said cabinet, of cushion Dcolnposed of parts
