RIDING-PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Iaetters Patent No. 517,923, dated April 10, 1894.
Application filed April 5, 1893. Serial No. 469,1 17. (No model.)
To all whon'u it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. Horr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Loys Shop, in ,the county of Alamance and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Riding-Plow, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in plows, and more especially to that class known as riding or sulky-plows, wherein the same is mounted upon a pair of sulky wheels, the plow being carried by the intermediate axle.
The objects of my invention are to produce a plow of this class adapted to be used in connection with various kinds of plow-shares, and to be so constructed as that the operator or driver mounted thereon may without leaving his seat raise and lower the plow thereby adapting it to run shallow or deep and raise or lower the point or give it any otherinclination or position that may be desired, and accomplish the same through the medium of a simple system of levers.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings:Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sulky-plow embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal' sectional view, the plow being shown elevated out of operative position, as when traveling to and from the field of operation or turning at the end of a furrow. Fig. 3 is a similar view, the plow beinglowered to an operative position. v
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings. a
In the construction of the plow an axleF is employed, the same having one end cranked and terminating in bearings F for the accom- A longitudinal and centrally located beam Ais supported upon and suitably secured to the center of the axle, and said beam is reduced at a point beyond the ground Wheels forming a draft-tongue A, and at opposite sides of the axle provided with front and rear vertical mortises A and A respectively. A U-shaped bracing-bail A is secured at its center to the upper side of the beam and is dropped at opposite sides thereof, as shown, and at its ends F. Hounds A are secured to the beam A, diverge, and'are secured to the bail at opposite sides of the beam. The beam is provided with the usual draft-appliances that need no description.
In the mortisesA and A there are located and adapted to move vertically and looselya front and a rear bar D and D, respectively, the said bars being pivotally connected as at D to the plow'carrying beam D whose ends project beyond the said vertical bars. front end of the plow-carrying beam D is, through the medium of a short chain D secured to the under side of the tongue, and the rear endof said plow-carrying beam is provided with a loose keeper D A handlever J is pivoted, as at UK, in arecess formed in the side and near the rear end of the main beam A, and the lower end of said lever engages loosely with the keeper D before men.-
tioned.
A central standard B rises from the beam extends to the rear and is secured to the axle A, and in front and in rear of the same shorter standards 0 and 0 rise Upon the standards 0 and O are 'piyotedor fulcrumed, as at G a pair of lovers designated as E and E, respectively, the latter extending forward and terminating in a handle. The first mentioned lever E is pivotally connected to a short link G having a series of holes, through any one of which a pin may be removably passed for connecting it adjustably to a handlever G, which is fulcrumed as at G upon the upper end of the central standard B and extends forward terminating in a suitable handle at the side of the lever E.
A seat standard H rises from the axle and supports a seat H for the accommodation of the driver or operator. 7
A plowstandard I is bolted securely to the plow-carrying beam D and to the same may be fastened any suitable style or pattern of plow I, through the medium of the heel-bolt 1 If desired double-shovels, scrapers, or any other plow may be employed.
It will be seen that the axle, by reason of the same being cranked atone side only, is inclined, or in other words, it declines away from the moldboard-side of the plow, and hence it offers a resistance to the side pressure of the soil against the moldboard as the furrow is formed, and the plow is therefore more apt to maintain a proper alignment and produce uniform, straight, parallel furrows. Between the two levers E andG a notched locking-standard G may be located, to which these levers may be secured.
The operation of the plow will be readily understood from the foregoing description in connection with the drawings, but in order to avoid mistake I will briefly outline the same as follows: In order to adjust the plow to run shallow the lever E is depressed so as to'raise the plow as an entirety. This lever, it will be seen, operating upon its fulcrum 0 causes the rear bar D to move vertically, and as it moves vertically the plow-carrying beam D moving on its front fulcrum D raises the plow a suitable distance, in which position it may be locked, where the ground is not stony, by engaging the lever E'with the aforesaid locking-standard. When depressed by means of the lever E its suck, or more properly speaking, its inclination, is regulated by the raisin gand lowering of the levers G, and it will be seen that the plow may be withdrawn through the medium of the lever J, if the point should become caught under a root or rock. While operating should the point meet with a hard substance the link G will permit it to yield and thus avoid breakage.
I do not limit the details of the invention to those herein shown and described, but hold that I may vary the same to any extent and degree within the scope of the knowledge of the skilled mechanic.
Having. described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a sulky plow, the combination with the axle, the groundwheels, the main beam, the lower plow-carrying beam, and the vertically and longitudinally movable bars mounted in elongated inortises in the main beam and pivoted at their lower ends to the opposite sides of the center of the plow-carrying beam, levers for raising and lowering said bars, and a rear lever pivoted on the main beam and loosely connected to the rear end of the plow-carrying beam, substantially as specified.
2. In a sulky plow, the combination with the axle, the ground-wheels, the main beam terminating in a draft-pole and provided with mortises, of the lower plow carrying beam provided at its rear end with a keeper, a lever fulcrumed on the rear end of the main beam and engaging the keepelga draft-chain between the under side of the pole and the front end of the plow-carrying beam, vertical bars arranged in mortises in the main beam and pivoted at their lower ends to the plowcarrying beam, the central standard B and the side standards 0 and G arranged on the main beam, the lever E fulcrumed on'the standard C and pivotally connected at its front end to the upper end of the front vertical bar, the lever G fulcrumed on the standard B and terminating at its front end in a handle, a link G connecting the rear ends of the levers G and E, and the lever E fulcruined on the standard 0 terminating at its front end in a handle, and having its rear end pivoted to the rear vertical bar G, substantially as specified.
3. In a sulky plow, the combination with an axle and its ground-wheels, and a main beam supported on the axle, of a plowcarrying beam arranged below the main beam, vertically movable bars loosely supported upon the main beam and pivotally connected at their lower ends to the plow-carrying beam, levers fulcrumed above the main beam and connected to the upper ends of the bars, and a lever pivoted to the beam and loosely con nected at its lower end to the plow-carrying beam, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own Ihave hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM D. HO'lT.
