STEAM-BOILER FURNACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 0. 516,647, dated March 20, 1894. Application filed August 23, 1893. Serial No. 483,823. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN Goonwm, a citifor the consumption of smoke and other pro-- ducts of combustion which are usually passed out through the smoke stack in an unconsumed condition.
To this end the main and primary object of this invention is to constructa steam boiler furnace with special reference to the fire box and fuel devices thereof, to' secure not onlya complete burning of the fuel, but to always maintain anintense heat throughout the entire furnace.
With these and other objects in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
I In the drawings:Figur e 1 is a'perspective v1ew of a steam boilerfurnace constructed 1n accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical sec-' zontal flue boiler B, provided with the lowerenlarged fire fiues 0, running into the rear smoke box D, from which smoke box lead the upper series of smaller return'fluesE, opening at their front ends into the furnace smoke box F. The furnace smoke box F, is formed in the rear top portion of the inclosed furnace A, and has leading from the top thereof an ordinary smoke stack G, carrying off the heat and other products of combustion. The said smoke box F, is inclosed at its bottom by the inclined baffle plate H.
The inclined baffle plate H, isarranged between the side walls of the furnace A, and declines from the upper outer edge of j the furnace to a point directly over the lower fire fines C, and belowthe line of the return flues E, thereby providing aconstruction whereby the smoke and other products of combustion from the fuelare directed in close proximity to the live bed of coals located'below and directly in front of the fire fiues O, as will be more particularly referred to.
Suitably supported in position within the lower portion of the furnace A, are a transverse series of stationary grate bars I. The stationary grate bars I, extend from the front door inclosed grate opening J, to a point beyond the center of the fire box, and terminate at their inner ends shortot' the front end of the boiler located directlybeyond and in a line with the fire box, and said stationary'grate formed by the parallel series of grate bars I, is disposed sufiiciently above the bottom of the fire box to form the ash pit K, within whichis placed the ordinary ash'pan, in order toprovide for theaccumulation and removal of ashes and coals when the fire is dumped,
and the necessary draft for the fuel is secured by reason of the circulation of air through the ash pit under the stationary grate.
The green coal for the furnace is fed onto the front end of the stationarygrate through the upper feed opening L. The upper feed opening L, is suitably arranged in the extreme upper portion of the baffle board or plate H, and is provided with a door M, which isclosed over the opening when not in use, and it is to. 'be observed that the portion of the stationary grate directly under the fuel opening always sustains green coal,- which remains on that portion of the, grate until sufficiently charred to have become coked and in a proper condition to be fed to the other ICO live coal portionof the grate, whereby a hot fire'may-be maintained and smoke and other products of combustion consumed. While the front portion of the stationary grate accommodates the green fuel, the rear half or portion is designed to accommodate fuel which is undergoing combustion and is intended to supply live coals onto the inner live coal dumping grate O.
The live coal dumping grate 0, comprises suitably connected transverse grate bars P, and is adapted to work in the space between the inner terminals of the stationary grate bars and the front end of the boiler 13, directly below the fire fiues O, and said dumping grate is mounted on the transverse rock shaft Q. The transverse rock shaft Q, is journaled at its extremities in the side walls of the furnace and is provided with an operating crank R, at one end, and this portion of said rock shaft is journaled in the door sill S, of the door inclosed side grate openings, which permits of access to the dumping grate when necessary. The crank portion of the rock shaft is provided with a pin opening T, adapted to receive the lockin g pin 15, passing through the outer portion of the sill S, and engaging said pin opening to hold the grate stationary.
At a point intermediate of the door opening s, and the upper feed opening L, of the furnace, one side wall of the furnace is provided with a fuel manipulating opening U, inclosed by a door a, and adapted to allow a suitable stoking iron to be inserted therein, so as to work the live fuel of that portion of the grate onto the inner dumping grate which always sustains a live bed of coal or coke, and the front Wall of the furnace is provided at opposite sides thereof directly above the front grate opening J, with the front door inclosed cleaning openings V. The cleaning openings V, admit of a suitable stoking iron or scraper, whereby the side portions of the fire box and grate may be cleaned, and clinkers broken and shoved onto the dumping grate, so that the same may be readily deposited into the ash pit.
Now with the construction described in mind, it is to be noted that in starting the tire in the furnace the dumping grate is first fired with coke until a live bed of such material is maintained thereon. Green coal is now fed onto the front end of the stationary grate through the upper feed opening L, and is shoved along such stationary grate up to the live bed of coals onto the dumping grate, by. means of a suitable stoking iron introduced through the front opening J. Now that portion of the green fuel on the rear portion of, the stationary grate immediately adjacent to the dumping grate, is fired up from the live fuel on the dumping grate, and it is to be observed that the smoke and other products of combustion emanating from this fuel are deflected by the inclined baffle plate H, to a point directly over the live bed of coals on the dumping grate whereby the same are completely consumed before entering the fire fines of the boiler. As the fire diminishes on the dumping grate the same is replenished with live fuel by introducing a suitable tool through the intermediate manipulating opening U, as already referred to, and this rear portion of the stationary-grate is suppl ed with green fuel by introducing the stoking iron through the upper feed opening and shoving the green fuel along, but it is to be understood that the green fuel of the front portion of the stationary grate is not moved into the fired portion until it has become coked from the fire in the rear portion of the grate. By this means a more thorough and perfect combustion of fuel is maintained throughout the herein described fire box than in those of most ordinary furnaces.
Changes in the'form, proportion and'the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured byLetters Patent, is-- 1. In a steam boiler furnace, the furnace fire box having front cleaning openings and a side fuel-manipulating opening located at one side thereof intermediate of its front and rear walls, the boiler opening into the rear end of the fire box, a stationary grate arranged within the fire box below-the plane of said cleaning and fuel manipulating openings, at live coal dumping grate mounted between the rear end of said stationary grate and the adjacent end of the boiler, and a door-inclosed side grate opening formed in the fire box directly opposite one end of said dumping grate, substantially as set forth.
2. In a steam boiler furnace, the furnace fire box having suitably arranged door inclosed grate openings, front cleaning openings, an intermediate fuel manipulating opening arranged in one side thereof, and a smoke box, a flue boiler opening into the rear end of the fire box and the smoke box thereof, an inclined battle plate leading from the front upper edge of the fire box to a point immediately above the main lower lines and provided at its upper exposed end with a feeding opening, a stationary grate mounted within the fire box and terminating short of the boiler opening into the rear thereof,and adapted to sustain green and live fuel, a live coaldumping grate mounted between the rear end of the stationary grate and the boiler, and means for dumping and locking said grate, substantially as set forth.
