SHOE-BRUSH.

Be it known that I, JACOB KNOEPFEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bristol, in the county of Bucks and State ofPennsylvania,have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shoe-Brushes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specifi cation and accompanying drawings.

Myinvention consists of a device for brushing boots or shoes, the construction of the same being hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out in the claims that follow the specification.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a shoe brush embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal vertical section on line 00, at, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section of the front part of the device. Fig. 4 represents a perspective view showing the side brushes adapted for boots and shoes of different widths. Fig. 5 represents avertical section thereof, on line y, y, Fig. 4:.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings:-A designates a box having a removable back B, whereby access may be had to the interior of the same. The said back is preferably inserted in vertical grooves formed in the sides. In the inner sides of the box are vertical grooves O, in which are removably fitted the scrapers D.

E designates the side brushes.

F designates the bottom brush, and G designates the top brush, the head H of the latter constituting a handle for carrying the device, it being seen that the scrapers D are behind the bottom brush F.

J designates the front wall of the box, the

same having its top below the top of the brush F, and forming a ledge K for supporting the foot during the brushing operation, this being as follows:-The boot or shoe is inserted into the box and worked, whereby the sole is scraped and brushed, and the side and top are brushed, the dirt readily dropping into the box. When the brushes F wear away, the head of the same is unscrewed,and reapplied in a higher position,and again secured. For this purpose, the wall J has openings one above the other in order to accomplish the vertical adjustment of said brushes F. In order to have access to said brushes F, the

back B and side brushes E, are removed. This permits the scrapers D to be withdrawn, the heads of the brushes E having closed the grooves O, and acted as a stop to the displacement of said brushes. The screws of the brushes F may now be conveniently reached, the effect of which is evident. The back Bis made of heavy material, preferably metal, so as to weight the box, and prevent shifting thereof. The scrapers D rest on strips D in the lower portions of the grooves 0, said strips being removable and replaceable by others of greater lengths, so as to raise thescrapers when they wear away on top.

In order to adapt the side brushes E to boots and shoes of different widths, their heads are freely mounted on the sides of the box by means of screws L, so as to slide thereon. Bearing against the backs of said brushes are springs M, which are connected with the box by means of screws or other means, in the present case by the screws L, whereby when the brushes are pressed by a wider sole, they separate, so as to properly admit the boot or shoe between the same, without however, affecting the brushing operation. When the foot is withdrawn, the brushes E return to their normal positions. The brushes E may be readily disconnected from the box by removing the screwsL so that the scrapers and front or bottom brush F may be displaced, as in previous case.

Having thus described myinvention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v 1.- A box having a removable back fitting in grooves in the side walls thereof, atop brush with head forminga handle for the said box, side brushes, adjustable scrapers, a front brush secured to the inner face of the front wall, said wall forming a ledge below the top of the said front brush, said parts being combined substantially as described.

2. A box having a removable back, side brushes with springs between them and the sides of the box, a front ledge with a brush adj ustably secured to its back, and scrapers adjustable in grooves in said sides, said parts being combined substantially as described.

3. A box for the purpose described having a removable back, grooves on the inner sides of said box with removable scrapers therein,
