VERTICAL-SHAFT BEARING.
. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,684, dated February 13, 1894.
Application filed October 28, 1393. serial No. 489,381. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatLANToNIo O. PESSANO, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vertical-Shaft Bearings, of which invention the following is a specification.
My invention consists of an adjustable stepbearing for vertical shafts, the object in view being, by simple devices, to practically free the shaft from undue friction, and to render the interior of the step-box accessible for purposes of examination, adjustment, removal, or repair of the parts therein contained without the necessity of removing the whole box or of jacking up the shaft further than simply to relieve the stepv of the shafts weight.

The shoe to of shaft 8 consists of phosphor-bronze or other anti-friction composition metal shrunk on foot .9 of the shaft, and it bears flatly on the upper face of the uppermost plate 0. The foot 8' is given a square or other rectilinear form in cross-section to prevent the shoe from turning on it.

The covering plate-t is made in two parts which come together With a dovetail joint as shown in Fig. 7, and the hollow or chambert of this plate is intended to be filled with packing. Plate twhenin posit-ion on the step-box,' makes chamber h practically dust tight.
The step-box chamber his supplied through the screw-closed oil hole 12 Fig. 2,with oil,which flows through the channels and ducts of the collar and anti-friction plates, keeping the shoe of the shaft and the several operative parts inclosed in the step-box lubricated.
In case it becomes necessary to inspect, adjust, or remove the operative parts inclosed in the step-box, easy access thereto is obtained by simply loosening the bolts of plate 9' and removing this plate.
When itis desired to surround the step-box with a water-jacket, as an additional precaution against the heating effect of friction, the bed-plate a is provided with the ledge c as shown, thus forming the Water space to. In other cases this ledge can be omitted.
I have'shown and described the use of two flat anti-friction plates 0, and I prefer to use this number, but good results are obtained I-CO surface and a convex or lower surface, said rocker fitting loosely in recess a; fourth one or more flat anti-friction plates 0 interposed between the shoe u of the shaft and the fiat 15 or upper face of rocker n, and fifth the collar j, substantially as set forth.
