SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,683, dated February 13, 1894.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SHELDON E. PATRICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockland, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Paper Boxes,of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention has for its object to provide a strong and durable paper box, which may be quickly put together without paste or any other means of fastening, independent of the material of which the boxis made, and it consists in a box having the peculiarities of construction hereinafter set forth,and the novel features of which are pointed outin the claims which are appended hereto and made a part hereof.
I have shown my invention in the accom- 2o panying drawings in which-- Figure l is a plan view of the blank which is employed to form the box. Fig. 2 shows the box which is formed by folding up the blank, the flap at one end of the box being thrown back to show more clearly the construction. Fig. 3 is a vertical lengthwise section of a box embodying my invention showing the method of securing the parts.
The invention will be readily understood 3o frolnthe following description of the method employed in constructing a box in which it is embodied.
Referring to the drawings Fig. 1 shows a flat piece of pasteboard or similar material which 5 is out to form a blank of the shape shown.
This blank consists of a central portion A which forms the bottom of the box, the two side portions B B which form the sides of the box, two end portions O O which form the 40 exterior end portions of the box each of which is provided with a flap (1 having a tongue or tuck f. At either end of each of the side portions B B is a part D preferably of a size equal to the size of the end of the box and 5 adapted to extend across and form a portion of the end of the box when the box is made.
The parts D are separated from the adjacent parts 0 O and their flaps d by a line of cut but are separated from the sides B B by a crease so that they may be folded at a given point with reference to the said sides B B.
The lines of crease are indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. Each of the parts D are provided with a slot g and when the box is formed and the parts 1) folded into position across the ends of the box, the slots g in the two parts D at each end of the box will be co-incident, as shown Fig. 2. The purpose of the slots 9 is to receive the tongue ortuck f which passes through said slots from the inside and extends downwardly between the parts D and the end parts 0 O as shown in Fig. 3. The precise shape of the flap (1 and the tuck f is not material, and if the width of the tongue f'be changed the length of the slots 9 may 55 also be changed. The blank shown Fig. 1 may be stamped or cut from flat stock and so shaped as to cause a minimum only of waste in the cutting of ablank of a given size from a piece of stock. After the blank has been prepared it is only necessary in orderto construct the box to turn up the sides B B to a position at right angles or substantially so to the bottom A, the partsD are then bent along the line of crease into position to extend across the ends of the box one of said parts lying inside the other. The ends 0 O are then bent over the upper edges of the parts D and the tuck f secured by being passed through the slots 9 from the inside and hav- 8o ing its free end passed between two juxtaposed end pieees and the box is ready for use.
It will be noted that the tuck f passes through both the parts D and occupies such a position with reference to the said parts D 8 5 that a strain applied inside the box to spread or separate the sides thereof will not operate to free the parts D from the tuck f so that the box cannot, under such a strain come apart. It will also be noted that the box is 0 very strong at the ends as each end is composed of three layers or pieces of material besides the flap d and tuck feach of the parts D preferably extending entirely across the end of the box. While I prefer to make the 5 parts D of a size sufficient to extend entirely across the end of the box I do not desire to limit myself to that feature since the partsD might be made somewhat shorter and very good results obtained.
What I claim is 1. A box made from paste-board or similar IOO material havingthree end pieces, two of which are attached to the sides of the box, over-lap each other, and are provided with coincident slots, the other of said end pieces being attached to the bottom of the box, and provided with a flap folded over the upper edges of the other end pieces, the said flap having a tuck that passes through the said coincident slots and at its free end lies between the two outermost end pieces, substantially as set forth.
2. A box made from pasteboard or similar material, having three end pieces, two of which are attached to the sides of the box, and are over-lapped by each other, and provided with a securing opening,located at mid-width of the SHELDON E. PATRICK.
