ADJUSTABLE WlNDOW-SGAFFOLD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,464, dated February 13, 1894.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. I-IILLs, of St. Paul, Ramsey county, Minnesota, have invented certain Improvements in Adjustable Window-Scaffolds, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in scaffolds or platforms adapted to be removably attached to the window sills of windows, and consists in the features of construction hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification; Figure 1. is aside elevation of my improved scaffold, the window sill and supporting wall being shown in cross section, and Fig. 2 is a partial plan view of the same.

In the drawings 2 represents the building wall, 3 the window frame and '4 the sill. The scafiold is constructed of two or more iron frame pieces A, made preferably of flat bar iron, having the floor supporting portion 5 upon which is placed the plank 6, and which is bent upward forming the upright portion 7 adapted to bear against the outer face of the sill and extend inward over the bottom of the window frame. The other end is bent upward forming the upright standard 8, with a loop 9 at the top, thence being carried downward and inward and attached to the portion 7 forming the brace 10. At the inner end of the part 7 is adj ustably connected the angular piece 11, by means of the set screws 12 secured to one and working in slots 13 in the other. To the downwardly projecting, end of the part 11 is adjustably connected, by means of the set screw 14, the hook member 15, the end of which is adapted to be brought into engagement with the window casing 16. In the part '7 is also preferably arrapged, the screw threaded standard 17 having the foot 18 adapted to bear upon the top of the window sill and thus to support the Weight of the scaffold. The frame pieces A are connected preferably by means of the rod or pipe 19 passed through the loops 9, and secured therein by set screws 20. By means of these various adjustable features hereinbefore described, it is evident that the device may be readily attached to windows of any Width, andwindow sills and frames of various proportions, simply by the adjustment of the set screws connecting the various parts.

Operation. In use the set screws 20 are loosened to bring the frame pieces 8 into proper position to fit the window, the set screws 20 being then secured upon the pipe 19. The set screws 12 and 14} are then adj usted to bring the various parts into proper position and bearing contact with the window frame, and the standard 17 is adjusted to support the platform in proper position. When not needed for use, the scaffold can be readily lifted out of position and removed.

I claim- 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of the pluralityof frame pieces, each made up of parts adjustably secured together to bring them into engagement with the window sill and frame, the platform supported upon said frame pieces, the rear standard, and the rod adjustably secured in loops in said standards serving asa rear protection or railing for the device, substantially as described.

2. In a device of the class described, comprisiugin combination the frame pieces adapted to be adjustably secured to the window sill and frame, havinga depending platform support, the outer or rear standards each having an eye or loop at the top, the brace connecting said loop with the part of theframe piece supported upon the window sill, and the rod adj ustably secured in said loops, substantially as described.

3. Inc. device of the class described, the platform supporting frame pieces each formed of a continuous bar shaped to rest upon the window sill or frame, thence bent downward to furnish a platform support, thence bent upward to furnish a rear standard with loops at the top, and thence bent at an angle and secured upon itself near the other end, the platform secured on said frame pieces, the rod adj ustably secured in said loops and connecting said frame pieces together, and the adj nstable support for the frame piece upon the window sill, substantially as described.
